Knife-wielding suspect surrenders to police after they let him pet their K9 dog

As a police officer, you truly never know what the day will bring. It’s a job filled with surprises and shocking moments, both good and bad.

Even though they can count on their co-workers from dispatch to give them as many details as possible, you can only know the full extent of a call when you’re at the scene.

These two deputies from Camden County, Georgie, received a call about a knife-wielding man walking along an interstate.

But this confrontation with the police was definitely unique, to say the least.

The suspect held the knife in his hand and when the deputies arrived, he did not want to drop it at all.

“Earlier this week, our deputies responded to a call of a person walking down the side of the interstate with a knife in their hand. After making contact with the individual, the person refused deputies orders to drop the knife,” the Camden County Sheriff’s Office wrote on their Facebook page.

However, things quickly took a turn when Cpl. Sullivan arrived as a back-up along with his partner from the K9 unit, Troger.

Cpl. Sullivan asked the knife-yielding man to drop the knife several times, but he didn’t want to hear any of it.

When he laid eyes on Troger, though, the man suddenly became a lot calmer with the police.

Then he made a bizarre request: he asked Cpl. Sullivan if he could pet his K9 partner.

The police officer quickly realized that this was a perfect opportunity to de-escalate the situation without any violence, so he made him a deal: the man was allowed to pet Troger under one condition; he had to drop the knife.

Without any further struggles or incidents, the suspect immediately dropped his weapon and was allowed to pet Troger for a while.

The officer then arrested the suspect, who was clearly in a bad mental state, so he could get help.

“Cpl. Sullivan then arrived on scene with his partner K9 Troger. The person then refused Cpl. Sullivan’s commands to drop the knife. However the person then asked Cpl. Sullivan if that was his K9 with him and he said yes. The individual then said can I pet the K9 and Cpl. Sullivan said if you drop the knife first. The person then dropped the knife, got to pet K9 Troger and then was taken without any further incident to get the proper help they needed. Outstanding job to our Patrol Deputies, Cpl. Sullivan and the star of the call K9 Troger,” the Facebook post concludes.

A dog is a man’s best friend, and they are also absolutely essential in law enforcement departments.

“The canines help us do our job safer and faster saving the Sheriff’s Office hundreds of man-hours every year. The canines freely and willingly go into areas deputies are not able to. We rely on the canine teams to use their special abilities to help us locate suspects, evidence, narcotics, explosives, or missing persons quickly,” the Law Enforcement Museum writes.

This story really took a surprising turn, and it’s all because of the power of dogs.

It really does make you wonder how this situation would have unfolded if Troger wasn’t there to calm things down.

An image of Troger was shared on Facebook, and the post received thousands of likes. Not all heroes have two legs!
