Couple wakes up to find a young dog they’ve never seen before sitting in their living room

It was 3:15 AM when a security camera first caught an injured and malnourished dog wandering the streets of Philadelphia.

Jack Jokinen was startled awake by his wife at 4 AM after the dog snuck into his home.

The couple had no idea how she got in.

To top it off, the animal didn’t look healthy.

As far as they knew, the front and back doors were locked, the windows were locked, and everything was secure. After all, the Jokinen’s had a 1-month-old baby to worry about.

But as it turns out, the sleep-deprived dad didn’t check the door behind him after he had walked the family dog before turning in for the night.

As it turns out, the wind blew open the door – and that allowed the pup to sneak in while seeking shelter during a storm.

When the couple checked their security footage, they found something even more unbelievable.

Someone walking by after 4 AM had seen their door open and yelled inside to make sure everyone was OK before approaching the door just to close it!

What a good samaritan!

But now the couple had quite the dilemma on their hands.

What do you do with a scared, sad, and injured stray that managed to sneak into your house before sunrise?

They put the furry intruder in their dog George’s crate and called Animal Contol first thing in the morning on December 14th, 2019.

But their only option was to come in and surrender the dog, after which it would go into “the system” and hopefully be adopted.

Instead, they decided to take her to the vet to get her microchip checked and see if they could get her some help.

The poor little girl weighed only 19 pounds, was covered in fleas and ticks, had infected paws, rotting teeth, and other health issues.

She was in terrible shape and one seriously depressed and lonely creature as a result.

The couple was heartbroken for her.

It turns out the tiny dog is actually

The couple decided to adopt her and give her a dignified life – they named her Suzy. And she joined the family that very day!

After just a week of caring for her, she began to gain weight and come out of her shell.

She even had a new brother to play with – a beagle mix named George (who has his own Instagram page!).

And, of course, there was a human baby sister to love on as well.

Suzy fits right into the family.

It took a lot of love and veterinary care and weeks of ointments and antibiotics to get her in good shape, but she made it and is now thriving in her new home with her generous family.

In a sweet video for The Dodo, Jack Jokinen also thanked the stranger who closed his door that he managed to track down – Steve.

“I’m gonna buy this guy so many beers,” he joked.

Even after all the drama, the new dad considers himself lucky. A stranger looked out for him and his family and he ended up with a sweet dog to top it off.

Not many people would see it that way, but it’s clear that this is a special family.

Suzy now has an Instagram page that chronicles her journey as well as showcases adoptable pets. Be sure to check it out by clicking here.
