Music plays over speakers at Denver airport – swing dancing flash mob erupts

On November 22, 2011, people who were traveling for the holidays were in for a little extra treat when they were passing through Denver International Airport (DIA).

Usually, when travelers are going through an airport, they feel wearisome and out of it and like they just can’t wait to reach their destination. It’s pretty much like purgatory — no one enjoys it, but it’s a necessary waiting period. On this day though, a few people got lucky as they got the chance to experience a fun show while they were waiting for their planes to take flight.

A very entertaining flash mob broke out in Jeppesen Terminal, which included about a hundred dancers from Community-Minded Dance (cmDance).

Together, the group performed a Lindy Hop to a medley of fabulous swing classics, swinging their way all the way to pure joy!

Rich Clarkson & Assoc. caught the whole thing on video, which took place in the airport’s Great Hall in Denver, CO.

The whole thing was coordinated by cmDance and choreographed by Lark Mervine, Ceth Stifel, Joseph DeMers, and Heather Ballew. It was organized by DIA’s art and culture program — if you didn’t know, DIA is actually home to a world-class collection of public art, which is funded by the City and County of Denver’s “one percent for art” requirement for public facilities.

The video is shot beautifully. Before we see the flash mob break out, we get a few cuts of b-roll — people retrieving their luggage, going shopping in the stores, and an overview shot of the big airport with its high ceilings.

Then, around the 20-second mark, we hear a horn begin to play as a couple of people jump into a formation. After that, we get a close-up of those people who are whipping out several different poses with big smiles on their faces. So far, it seems pretty playful!

The full band kicks in and more dance partners effortlessly swing in to join the fun. People who are just passing by pretty much stop immediately so that they can watch the whole performance unfold.

Everyone is coupled up with a dancing partner and to be honest, it is a swinging sensation! The women twirl around in the men’s arms and make it look like they are not even trying. Everyone involved seems to be having a really fun time, too.

About a minute into the show and the song changes, which switches up the gears nicely. Each partner gets up one-by-one and continues to dance, still swing dancing but this time at a slightly different pace.

The video went viral online after it was uploaded, gaining millions of views and respect from people all over the world.

It is so incredible to see that something as simple as dancing can totally break the ice with people you don’t even know. Because these 100 people decided to be vulnerable and have fun, they created such a wonderful moment filled with joy for countless strangers who were just trying to get through an otherwise mundane travel day.
