Russian couple performs risky and graceful routine to "Jesus Christ Superstar"

Ice skating is a sport that asks a lot out of its participators. While all professional athletics are demanding and require the full attention of its competitors, ice skating requires a bit of imagination as well.

True, to be a professional ice skater, one must possess grace and superb athletic ability. But it is also a performance. Unlike other sports, it requires the viewer to believe in things that might not be there. Oftentimes, skaters are telling a story.

When the performer is able to get the viewer to suspend their beliefs for their performance in addition to being an all-around amazing talent, youâve struck gold.
The above describes the Russian skating duo Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov.

After all, the pair are National, European, World and Olympic Champions!
In 2013, they gave a captivating performance to âJesus Christ Superstar,â a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The piece has been performed many times over in several different ways. The opera loosely tells the story of the last week of Jesusâ life.
With so many renditions, each one may attempt to perform it better than the one prior. But these two most definitely set the bar high. The pair remain remarkably in sync throughout the entire performance. They move with such a quiet rhythm, but itâs difficult not to be swayed.
Though the duo wasnât married at the time of this performance, itâs quite clear to see that they share magnetic chemistry and care a great deal for the other. Itâs all in the eyes and boy do they pull off those looks!

Their set was much more than just skating around an ice rink. Both skaters were able to get into character and remain these characters from the beginning until the very end. They make it clear that a sad story is being told. So much so, itâs difficult to not begin to feel a bit of remorse creeping in while watching it.

Volosozhar and Trankov move as one, whether she is holding on to his skates as he spins her around at a rapid rate or if theyâre spinning in separate circles, it truly is like clockwork.

Whatâs more baffling is the rate in which they perform their movements. They skate at full speed around the rink and continue that pace even when Trankov tosses Volosozhar into the air. The first toss alone sends Volosozhar spinning around several times in the air. The announcer refers to her spin as a âtriple twist.â

Itâs difficult not to get hooked!

One of the most daring moments come when Volosozhar gets thrown into the air and spins yet again but lands backward and on one foot. The crowd erupts in applause. The announcer whispers, âwow, thatâs incredible.â
Itâs one of those things you have to see to believe. Maybe just donât think about doing it yourself the next time you head back out onto the ice. The thought alone might increase your heart rate.

When the couple finishes, they receive a standing ovation. The crowd applauds and whistles loudly. Finally, the couple can break character. They smile from ear-to-ear realizing that, together, they have won over the audience.

They skate around the rink picking up the roses and other gifts that the crowd has bestowed onto them.
