School teacher goes above and beyond by wearing her anatomy lesson as a bodysuit

We should all hope to have teachers like Verónica Duque in our lives at some point.

Have you ever heard how little people really know about human anatomy? This is a woman and educator who is committed to having her students understand the bodies they live in.

Even if we put aside how little men know about women’s bodies or women know about men’s, basic human anatomy is actually pretty important – it helps you keep yourself healthy AND has the added benefit of allowing you to call people on their completely nonsensical claims about health, diets, “toxins,” etc.

Here’s how bad the situation is currently when it comes to understanding our bodies: when researchers at Lancaster University’s medical school tested a group of volunteers on anatomy, the ONLY body part that people could locate with 100% accuracy was the brain. Ironic.

That’s why we’re giving major props to the 43-year-old Duque, who has been teaching for 15 years and currently works at María Teresa Íñigo de Toro School, in Valladolid, Spain. When she saw an anatomical bodysuit pop up on the website AliExpress, she went for it, knowing it would help engage her 3rd-grade students in their anatomy lessons.

She told Bored Panda:

“Knowing how hard it is for kids this young to visualize the disposition of internal organs, I thought it was worth giving it a try.”

Her students are 8 to 9-year-olds, so we can only imagine anatomy is going to be awkward for them anyway. Nevertheless, anything that helps the information stay in their heads is only going to do them good down the line.

Her creative idea went viral after her husband Tweeted photos of her in the bodysuit in class. It currently has over 70,000 likes and over 14,000 retweets.

He went on to talk about just how proud he is of his amazing wife and her commitment to her profession.

Duque told Bored Panda that she teaches everything from natural and social sciences to art to English and Spanish at the school. Meanwhile, most of us learned anatomy in a 15-minute lesson from a phys ed teacher who didn’t really want to do it, which is why we can barely tell the difference between a pancreas and a spleen.

As you might imagine, Duque values creativity in all of her classes:

“I decided long ago to use disguises for history lessons,” she said. “I’m also using cardboard crowns for my students to learn grammatical categories such as nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Different grammar kingdoms, so to say.”

Her approach to teaching (and her love for her job) makes us think of some of the better teachers we’ve had in our lifetimes – the ones who cared, who engaged us, and who made learning fun (or at least something other than a total drag). And she deserves a lot of credit, because it’s a hard job to do well.

One thing she hopes for as her story continues to go viral is that people will see teachers in a different light:

“I’d like society to stop considering teachers to be lazy bureaucratic public servants. We’re certainly not.”

There will always be good and bad teachers out there (and plenty in between), but it’s worth highlighting the best moments of some of the best teachers, if only to remember that they’re out there, all over the world.

Duque is not the only teacher who has had this idea. In 2015, CNN highlighted the dedication of a teacher in the Netherlands who also donned an anatomical bodysuit to engage her students.

And while we certainly don’t need to see every teacher dress up in a skintight bodysuit(!), it’s clear that some subjects are best learned with a dose of creativity.
