When Zane Powles’s school shut due to coronavirus, his main concern was for the kids he taught. Even if they weren’t in class, he knew he had to look out for them.
The best teachers go above and beyond for their students. Zane Powles goes above and beyond and then a little further still.
For years, Powles has been a teacher at Western Primary School in the UK town of Grimsby. Many of the children that Powles teaches are from low-income households. During term time, the kids rely on free school lunches. With the closure of schools due to coronavirus, that food source was gone.
It didn’t take Powles long to think up a solution. He would make and prepare the lunches himself.
“I needed to know if they were safe, if they were healthy, and if they had access to food.” – Zane Powles.
So every morning at 7 am, Powles went to his school to make around 100 sandwiches and pack them into bags with fruit and a few other snacks.
Then he’d leave the school and walk to the houses of every single child.
Powles was quite a sight as he walked through the streets of his Northern British town.
He wore a huge backpack on his back, a normal-sized one on his front and attached some trash bags to the front backpack to hold the rest.
It took Powles around two hours to deliver every lunch per day.
He’d also check in on his students to ensure that they were well. And now and then, he’d hand out homework.
The kids loved seeing Powles. It’s not surprising to learn that he’s a very well-liked teacher!
Powles delivered these lunches every day during the lockdown. Then, finally, on the last day of term in late July, he prepared lunches for the last time.
By the end, Powles had traveled a total of 600 miles. He also carried approximately four tons of lunches to the kids.
“It’s been relentless and exhausting, but it’s been well worth it. They’re always so happy and grateful.” – Zane Powles.
Powles was understandably worn out by the end of the term. Luckily, he’d been able to ensure that the kids would not go hungry over the summer.
His work gained the attention of the professional soccer player Marcus Rashford, who provided food vouchers for the kids over the summer break.
Powles himself decided to use the summer break as an opportunity to provide food for even more kids.
He decided to cycle on his own to and through all of the capital city castles in Great Britain. He was doing this feat in an effort to raise money for two charities that support children.
Initially, Powles aimed to raise £5,000 ($6,500) for the charities. But he soon exceeded this goal. He has currently raised over £8,000 ($10,000) for the kids.
He is currently on his journey and still accepting donations here.
And is it any surprise to learn that Powles is an award-winning teacher?
In 2019, one of his student’s parents nominated him for the Inspirational Primary School Teacher Award, which he went on to win.
Clearly, Powles is an incredible human being and a fantastic educator. Every child that he teaches/looks after is lucky.
