Teacher is frightened to see a scared young boy furiously pedaling his bike down the highway
How well would you fare in an emergency situation?
It’s easy to come up with an ideal answer: call 911, administer first aid, yell for help, etc. But how would you handle things when you’re caught off-guard by an alarming scenario you never thought you’d encounter?
If adults find themselves helpless, imagine how children feel.
Then again, they do have ways of surprising us and proving us wrong.
A seven-year-old from South Carolina handled an emergency situation quite impressively.
Risky as it sounds, it involves him speeding down the highway on his bicycle.
It’s a horrifying thought, with scary possibilities of collisions and what-not, but he did what he had to do for his dad.
He was spotted by a first-grade teacher named Keller Sutherland.
Not only was she left wondering why he was biking down the highway, but she was also extremely anxious for his safety.
Fortunately, he turned out to be someone she knew – her former student. She was able to get his attention and find out why he was taking such a huge risk.
Cameron explained that his dad had collapsed because of a diabetic episode.
The young boy immediately thought of dialing 911 on his dad’s phone but a passcode prohibited him from doing so.
(Parents, consider this next time! There’s a good reason not to have a passcode after all.)
His next move was to seek help from their next-door neighbors but no one was home.
And that’s how he ended up biking along the highway to look for help.
Kelly and Cameron were able to give first responders the home address.
Once they arrived, they found Cameron’s dad half-conscious in the bathroom.
Thanks to the quick-thinking child, the father was well on his way to recovery.
The proud teacher shared that it was fortunate how she was in the right place at the right time.
Knowing she assisted the young boy in saving his father’s life, Kelly felt lucky.
She shared,
“God just showed up in an amazing way. On a day when I felt I wasn’t making an impact, He just intervened and placed me where I needed to be for Cameron.”
His actions, and those of his teacher, Kelly, were commended by Greenville County Schools on a Facebook post.
It read:
“Teachers create bonds with their students every day. This week a teacher and student saved a life.”
“Kelly Sutherland was driving home from Ellen Woodside Elementary when she saw a child riding down Highway 25 on his bicycle.”
“The child appeared scared and was pedaling as fast as he could. Sutherland recognized the child as one of her former students.”
“With her help Cameron was able to get home safely and contact first responders to revive his unconscious father.”
Cameron was fearless. He stopped at nothing to find help for his dad.
Because of him, immediate medical care was given and his dad was able to recover.
Kelly says Cameron has to be the bravest little boy she’s ever seen, calling him a true hero. Cameron’s deed earned him a brand new bike but more than that, respect and admiration from others.
When an emergency takes place and you’re left scared and helpless, remember just how well Cameron handled it.
Let his courage inspire you to step up fearlessly for yourself and for others.
