Stray dog mysteriously shows up to school every day – so a teacher decides to take action

Homeless dogs wander the streets where they live. Despite their life on the street, these animals remain creatures of habit just like dogs who have a home.

When one dog made it a habit of sitting in front of a school in Houston, Texas, he had no idea how much it would change his life.

When teacher Caleb Schaffer arrived outside the Houston, Texas, school where he works, he was greeted by an unusual sight. A black Labrador was sitting in front of the school doors.

“He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me,” Schaffer told The Dodo.

Thinking nothing more of it, Schaffer hurried inside to begin his day. Still, he was haunted by the scared and sickly-looking dog. So, Schaffer went to check on him later, but he was nowhere to be seen. He heard that someone had called Animal Control, which wasn’t able to catch the dog.

The next morning upon arriving at work, Schaffer saw the dog again, waiting in the same spot as the day before. The dog seemed to instantly recognize Schaffer.

“He was a lot happier to see me,” he said. “I started noticing how bad his skin was and how much it was torturing him. He was constantly scratching and whining. I felt bad there was nothing I could do before school.”

Feeling bad for the dog, Schaffer asked his students to help him keep an eye out for him. Of course, when he went outside to look for the dog after school, he could not find him. Going home, he wondered if the dog would be waiting for him the next day.

Just like clockwork, the dog was sitting in the same spot the next morning as Schaffer arrived at work. This time, though, Schaffer had a plan.

“This time he ran up to greet me,” Schaffer said. “So, I just walked back to my car, calling him, and he came. I was trying to lure him using tofu from my lunch; it was all I had! Finally, I just picked him up and put him in.”

Finding the dog a safe place

The kind and caring teacher drove the dog to his apartment, where he had his wife watch the dog while he ran back to work. Taking the rest of the afternoon off, Schaffer went back home to help the dog. Unfortunately, Schaffer couldn’t keep him as he already had two, the maximum that he was allowed to have where he lived.

Naming the dog Clive, Schaffer called around to the local rescues. None of them had the room for Clive, so he took him to the Harris County Animal Shelter.

“I figured some basic vet care at the shelter was better than nothing. He was really suffering,” Schaffer said.

Schaffer continued to work to find Clive a place to go to keep him from being euthanized at the county shelter. Eventually, Urgent Shelter Pets of Houston agreed to take him. From that point, Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption saw Clive’s video and quickly found him a foster home.
