‘Teddy bear’ looking elderly dog can’t comprehend why he’s taken back to shelter seven times

We all love to see cute, fluffy, and playful dogs.

In fact, when you go to a shelter, these dogs are the ones who get to be adopted first.

Sadly, many dogs are being left behind.

The dogs that get left behind are those that have problems, those who have physical deformities, and even senior dogs.

A few months ago, there was one dog who faced the same situation even though he possesses such an adorable ‘teddy-bear face’.

Meet Martin, a senior dog, who was surrendered by his senior owner.

Martin’s owner loved him so much, and because of this love, he decided it was better for Martin to find a home that could care for him.

His senior owner was no longer capable of providing the best life for Martin.

“His [dad] was 89 years old and reached a point where he couldn’t provide the life that he felt Martin deserved,” Samantha Ranlet said in an interview with The Dodo.

Ranlet, a marketing communications specialist at SPCA, also said that Martin’s owner “ wanted a better life for him.”

All the senior dad wanted was for his Martin to live the best life, even if that means parting ways.

Caring for Martin was a challenge because of his age.

He needs more attention, help, nutrition, exercise, and treatment for his condition.

As sad as it was, Martin seemed to understand the situation.

The beautiful senior dog went with the people who took him.

He was gentle.

“He adjusted pretty well,” Ranlet said. “I don’t know if he understood what was going on, but even from day one, he was just this happy, easy-going, really sweet old man with a teddy bear face.”

Unfortunately, Martin didn’t get lucky with the people who came into the shelter.

There would be times when Martin would get adopted, but would then be returned to the shelter.

Sadly, he was returned seven times in just two months. It was heartbreaking for all the staff.

Like his previous owner, they wanted him to find him forever home, and being returned like that is just truly heartbreaking.

Not everyone knows that caring for senior dogs can become a challenge, especially for Martin who is also heartworm positive.

The staff of SPCA of Wake County didn’t give up.

Instead, they posted on Facebook saying how gentle Martin is and how he loves and appreciates simple things.

They were all hopeful that someone would see this post and guess what? Their post blew up!

Their post was shared 2.9K times and had reached over 3.2K views. In no time, they received lots of applications.

And one of these applications stood up.

It came from a couple who had experience taking care of senior dogs.

It excited them when they got to meet them.

“They weren’t afraid of his age and they weren’t afraid of the fact that he had heartworm disease,” Ranlet recalled. “They just fell in love with him and his teddy bear’s energy.”

Martin now shares his toys and bed with his new little cat sister named Hilltop.

The staff at the shelter get to see this fluffy bear for his checkups, but they still miss him.

They posted on Facebook a photo of Martin and his new mom and dad.

Everyone was so happy that he’ll live the best life.

Senior dogs also need love and care.
