The real treasure behind treasure hunting.

George Tindale, a 15-year-old from Grantham, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, learned that a real treasure isn’t measured by any amount of money. Just a couple of months back, George and his 52-year-old dad Kevin caught something huge when they went off for treasure fishing using a magnet in the River Witham.

Using two powerful magnets, they managed to pull up a safe that was submerged in the river.

The father-and-son duo decided to crack the safe open using a crowbar and to their surprise, it was filled with loads of cash. After counting the bills, they came up with a total of $2,500 Australian dollars (equivalent to US$ 1,800). Together with the cold cash were credit cards that have expired in 2004 and a shotgun certificate.

Using the gun certificate and credit cards, they were able to track down the safe’s owner – Rob Everett.

After making sure the identity of the safe’s owner, George and his parents visited Rob Everett who runs Winkworth and the Money Options Group in Grantham. Turns out, the safe was stolen during an office robbery back in 2000 and the culprit threw the safe in the river. The suspect who turned out to be a teenage boy was later on caught by authorities.

“I remember at the time, they smashed into a cabinet to get to the safe. I was just upset that there was a nice pen on my desk, a Montblanc that was never recovered,” Everett said

As a token of appreciation, Everett gave the honest 15-year-old George a small reward and also offered him an internship.

“Some people are just wonderful. They’ve gone to all that trouble. I gave a small reward to George. What’s good about it is George is a good mathematician apparently, and I run a wealth management company now, and I’ve offered him work experience when he’s ready to give him something back, give him some opportunity. I’d love him to work for us. He’s only 15 but gives him a bit more time and I’d be happy to give him an opportunity,” Everett said.

He added, “I was just amazed that they’d been able to track me down. There are some really nice and good people in this world. They could have kept the money, they could have said they attempted to get hold of me.”

Treasures are everywhere, but a good heart is rare.

Everett said something about the importance of what George did, “There’s a big lesson there. It teaches George that doing good and being honest and giving back is actually more rewarding than taking.”

“I mean it was amazing really. We pulled this safe out and it had all that money in it. We counted it roughly on the bank and I think we totaled it about two and a half grand and we were just shocked,” George said while recalling that moment when they discovered what was inside the safe.

The teen also found the internship offered by Everett was something to look forward to just in case he’s ready to leave school.

In fact, apart from looking for treasures underwater, George’s hobby also educated him on facts about water pollution.

It’s true that no such physical treasure is more valuable than a good trait such as honesty.
