The California student assembled her fellow honor society members from Tesoro Highschool to unify for a good cause. Shah is dedicating her time to helping the homeless during the crisis of the global pandemic. A beacon of light in the darkness, she is working diligently to deliver low-cost sanitation kits to those who need them in the homeless shelters of the Los Angeles area.

When prompted, Shah told CNN:

“They don’t have necessities right now that are crucial to remain clean and stay germ-free […] It’s important for people to step in and just do whatever they can, even if it helps just one person.”

Shah has already assembled more than 250 kits with plans to do many more.

With a big heart, she is no stranger to community service. Last year, she successfully raised thousands of dollars for the homeless with a dance recital. Shah has spoken out on the subject, urging many to practice gratitude for the things they do have or may take for granted.

“Imagine yourself in their shoes, without a house, without clothes, without any sanitation […] That’ll make you be grateful for what you have, and possibly donate and do something good for the other people.”
According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, there are more than 150,000 homeless people living in California on any given day. This is the most out of any US state. Shah fears that the homeless could be quickly forgotten during this time of panic and distancing.
“A lot of people are just focusing on themselves and their families.”

And so Shah has set out to be a voice for her community.

The kits she’s working to assemble are modeled to include all necessary sanitary measures including hand sanitizer, soap, lotion, and even homemade reusable facemasks.

Impressively, Shah is taking the reins by making facemasks at home – a move that helps everyone. By resourcing her own materials she’s helping store-bought masks remain available to those who are unable to make their own.

What first started as a project with some recruited classmates turned into an overwhelmingly positive response.

Due to this, Shah created a GoFundMe campaign page to encourage people globally to donate to her cause. She wants to use the funds to purchase additional materials needed for the kits. She’s indicated her interest in expanding outside of Los Angeles as well.

The campaign has been going very well for Shah. On her first day, she was able to raise $410! And her numbers climbed onward and upward after that.

Within nine days she had raised over $13,000 in donations out of her $20,000 goal. And as of today, she’s raised $19,200. Congratulations Shaivi!
