Teen didn't know he was caught on camera helping blind woman cross the street

Someone who is truly good will practice kindness even if no one is watching.

Kindness can take place even if there is no audience. You can help people without expecting to get a reward. True character is the most positive and real kind of kindness but we rarely hear of it in our society. But that doesn’t mean it’s extinct.

Dontarius Caldwell is a perfect example. Just 15, the teenager who lives in Cincinnati was completely oblivious to the frightening fact that there were eyes watching him cross the street one day in the middle of February.

Just getting out of school, the teenager was waiting for the bus to take him home from school. He was with his younger sister. Her name is Diamond.

To Dontarius, it was just a regular day. He was playing a game on his phone and his sister was sitting next to him, also glued to her phone. But then, Diamond noticed something.

“Diamond was listening to music, then she looked over and I looked over to see what she was looking at,” Dontarius recalled.

Diamond looked across the road and saw an elderly woman who was having trouble getting the button for the crosswalk sign to work. So she asked her brother to go help the woman.

“I told Dontarius that I think she blind, you should get up and go help her, and he got up and went to go help her cross the street two times while I waited for the bus to come,” Diamond told WLWT 5.

All Dontarius wanted to do was help, and he thought it was the right thing to do. So he walked over to the blind woman and offered her a hand.

“I said, ‘Ma’am do you need some help?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ She gave me her hand and I held it,” Dontarius said.

He then assisted the woman across the street. Moving on, Dontarius just continued his everyday actions and went back to his smartphone. It wasn’t a big deal he thought.

But he didn’t realize that everything he did for the blind woman was caught on a surveillance camera right across the street. It showed the whole touching moment and how he helped her.

Photos of him as he helped the woman appeared online and inspired a bunch of people. His sincerity and helpfulness shone through and everyone truly appreciated that he did an act of kindness even when there was no one looking…or at least he thought that way.

When asked about why he decided to offer his help, this Aiken High School freshman only replied:

“I was just helping the elderly, giving a helping hand. The keyword is helping hand. Everybody gotta get a helping hand.”

For young Dontarius, what he did was completely normal. He simply did what was the right thing to do.

“If you be kind, what happens (to them) happens to you.”

What an incredible story! If only more people were like this.
