Extraordinary teen provides free sanitation kits for homeless during health crisis
The global pandemic or COVID-19 has impacted everyone all across the world. During these troubling times, homeless people can be forgotten.
When most homeless people don’t even qualify for the stimulus, they are still left to sleep on the streets.
They have to find shelter in some of the harshest conditions with no way to stay clean in these very contaminated places. People working on the frontlines in homeless shelters have had to be prepared for a higher volume of people staying at their shelters, putting themselves at risk.
The CDC has even released steps for homeless shelters to follow during COVID-19 and plan accordingly in case of an outbreak.
With our medical workers struggling to find more masks and other equipment it makes it almost impossible to try to find life-saving equipment for homeless shelters.
But there is a hero who knew she had to take action for the homeless during this very sensitive time.
15-year-old Shaivi Shah of Rancho Santa Margherita, California, wanted to ensure that everyone has the chance to stay safe. So Shah created a plan to make free “sanitation kits” to give to Los Angeles homeless shelters.
Shah even inspired her Tesoro High School honor society team to get on board and help her make the kits along with her.
Shah has had some experience creating low-cost portable medical devices at her science fair in the past. With that knowledge, it helped her create a low-cost sanitation kit for homeless shelters.
The kit includes a small hand sanitizer, lotion, antibacterial soap, and a homemade mask.
Those are all crucial items to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Shah spoke with CNN and expressed,
“It’s important for people to step in and just do whatever they can, even if it helps just one person”
That Nobel perspective has made a huge impact. Shah has donated over 250 sanitation kits to homeless shelters in Los Angeles and this is only the beginning.
Since then Shah has created a GoFundMe campaign to help raise additional funds for more sanitation kits.
The campaign raised $13,000 in only 9 days! Shah’s message has not gone unnoticed and more and more people are ready to help right along with her. The efforts of just one person does have the power to create an entire team of people to join the same mission.
At only 15-years-old this young activist is impacting the Los Angeles homeless community immensely.
With the help of those GoFundMe donations, Shah has the opportunity to branch out to other cities. Shah’s team is able to be a voice for people who feel they don’t have one.
With more people stepping outside of themselves to lend a helping hand for others in need can change the world.
We thank Shah and her amazing family for starting such an incredible movement. Shah is truly a bright light during these rather dark times.
