Teen dodges traffic to save a cat thrown onto a busy highway

Throwing your trash out while driving is already questionable behavior in itself – but what if the motorists were throwing something else out instead?

How many times have you seen drivers rolling their windows down to improperly dispose of their garbage? And how many times did you do a double-take to check what they have discarded?

A family from Michigan was thankful for their vigilance when they saw themselves in the exact situation. Because instead of junk, the motorist threw out a pet cat.

Erin Brown was driving along I-196 to take one of her kids to a birthday party.

As they were traversing the freeway, Gavin Orlowski, her son, suddenly heard his mother gasp in alarm. A fellow driver had thrown something out the window and onto the road. But she noticed something strange.

The pile of trash was moving.

It was a cat, and it was hanging on for dear life at the edge of the highway.

Gavin, who was sitting in the passenger seat, didn’t think twice when he confirmed what he was seeing. They stopped in the middle of the highway. Gavin stepped out and was raising his hand to ask other motorists to let him pass. He needed to get to the cat and fast.

Gavin shared that 75% of the cat’s body was already over the bridge.

It was desperately hanging onto whatever piece of asphalt its little paws could grab onto.

Gavin quickly took the cat in his arms then ran back to their car. The family wanted to pursue the van that threw out the cat but it was already long gone. As much as they want to put the heartless act to justice, the cat needed them more.

They rushed the cat, later named Lucky due to the circumstances surrounding his rescue, to the BluePearl Animal Hospital.

Upon checking, the cat was generally okay.

It added to Gavin’s question of why the cat had to be thrown out in the first place. Some of its nails were torn, however, due to having latched onto the road.

Fortunately, as they were thinking of how they could check the cat out of the clinic, the receptionist approached them with a welcome surprise.

“The receptionist walks in and says, ‘Mrs. Brown we just received a phone call from one of your Facebook friends to cover, basically all of the bill,'” Gavin told WZZM.

It would seem that the Universe was on their side, especially when it felt their intention of giving Lucky a loving home.

Gavin quickly grew attached to Lucky, and they decided to bring the cat home.

While Rocko, their dog, would have to make peace with the fact that there was a new man in the house, Lucky adjusted well to his forever home.

For Gavin, it was a lesson on evil, said his mother.

“It really hit them, that’s the first time I think they have experienced just intentional pure evil,” their mom said to WZZM.

And with this realization comes greater compassion and understanding. The encounter, no matter how heartbreaking, has convinced Gavin to pursue what he wanted all along – to be a veterinarian.
