Aaron Kaatz was walking home from a friend’s house in Winnipeg, Manitoba recently when something caught his eye. He was walking through a back lane when he heard a faint whimpering sound coming from a garbage bag. The bag was tied up and positioned next to a dumpster.
Kaatz spoke with CBC News about what he did upon hearing the whimpers.
“It sounded like a little puppy, so I checked the area and I looked and saw a garbage bag there, and it started moving,” Kaatz told CBC News.
Aaron goes through a range of emotions.
The kind man picked the frightened puppy up in his arms and took them to his car. He later told the media that he went through a range of emotions.
“I was speechless at first,” Aaron continued. “There was a whole bunch of mixed emotions. I was glad I was there to rescue it, but I was mad that it was thrown away in a garbage bag just left there to die.”

The small puppy had no identification and was likely tied up in the garbage bag for a few hours before Aaron found her. She might never know how lucky she was that he heard her whimpers that day.
“She’s an absolute perfect dog … she just falls right into your arms and she just wants to be loved,” Aaron says of the puppy he has since named Elle.
Aaron and the small dog have struck up quite a bond but the experience has left the young man frustrated about how someone could treat a puppy like that.
“I don’t know what can make people throw away a small dog like that,” Kaatz said. “It is a life. It can be someone’s best friend.”
Aaron contacted the Winnipeg Humane Society about what he discovered. He was told that Animal Services Agency would be notified. Aaron is also hoping that other people will be on the lookout for similar situations.
“Be on the lookout if you hear something or see something going on or if you do find a dog just care for it,” he said.
Aaron says he plans on keeping Elle with him. She needs a home and he has one he’s willing to provide. He’s proud to have rescued Elle but concerned about what someone else did to her.
Aaron has two other dogs at home. He said they are looking out for Elle and treating her like a member of the family.
“[They’re] parenting her essentially,” he said. “She’s absolutely warmed up to us right now.”
So now Elle has a new home, new siblings, and everything she needs for a happy life. It could have been much different for her, however. Thankfully, a kind-hearted man heard her cry out and came to her rescue.
