Video captures brave teen shoving bear over a wall to save her dogs
How far would you go to save your pet? Chances are you would more than likely even risk your life if it came down to it. In one such case, a teen has put the lives of her pet over her own, risking it all to save them.
Humans and wild animals are coming into contact more and more
With the encroachment of the suburbs into the natural habitats of wild animals contact with them has become a more common occurrence. For smaller animals, this is not that big of a deal. But larger animals, such as coyotes, mountain lions, and bears, pose a bigger threat, especially to pets.
Simply passing through
The incident with the brown bear happened over the Memorial Day weekend, 2021. It all started when a brown bear mother and her two cubs climbed across a wall in the back yard of a Bradbury, California home.
At first, all seems well as the bear and her cubs are simply passing through, but soon things turn more serious. And it was all caught on video.
The incident turns dangerous
As the mom and her cubs make their way across the wall, a group of dogs runs into the frame. Barking at the large bear, the dogs are only trying to protect their territory from something they consider a threat. The dogs are oblivious to the danger they are in as the bear starts to swipe at the dogs.
The bear was doing only what came naturally to her
Of course, all the mother bear is trying to do is protect her cubs. So, one can’t really blame her for her actions. It seems that things might turn tragic for the dogs. It is that this point that an unlikely hero emerges to save their lives.
A pet owner concerned for her pets
A young woman, 17-year-old Hailey Morinico runs into the frame. Not even flinching, she heads straight for the bear. It is not clear what she intends to do. Bears are dangerous animals and can cause serious injury or even kill with their claws.
Hailey then pushes the bear back. Falling to the other side of the wall, the bear tries to scramble back up. Hailey takes this opportunity to gather her pets and rush them inside the home. She did end up spraining her finger and scraped her knee confronting the bear, while her dogs survived unscathed.
Do not confront a bear
The bear eventually disappeared over the wall with her cubs into a neighbor’s yard.
“Honestly, the only thing I had in mind was to protect my dogs,” Morinico told KCAL-TV. “Do not push bears and do not get close to bears. You do not want to get unlucky. I just happened to come out unscathed.”
