Teen’s deep voice singing “Sound Of Silence” will go down in school’s history
Simon and Garfunkel’s original song “The Sound of Silence” has stood the test of time.
The song was written by Paul Simon in 1963 and then was released in 1964. Oddly, that version was not the one that became the hit song we all know.
In 1965, producer Tom Wilson remixed the song by adding electric instruments and drums. That version is the one that found success for Simon and Garfunkel.
So many artists have found the song to be inspiring and heart-felt, and have taken the time to pay tribute by performing it. Some artists have made their own versions of it and have had great success in doing so.
The band Disturbed had some of the most recent and significant success with covering the song.
In 2015, 50 years after the song hit the radio waves, David Draiman and his band Disturbed recorded their version of the song. It had a compelling and eerie vibe while showcasing Draiman’s vocal range. The performance, filmed for Conan in 2016, had put Disturbed on the map once again.
The live performance had 100 million views on Youtube, making it the most popular clip ever from the Conan show.
So is there enough room for another version of the song to find success? Sure! It’s a great song.
16-year-old Ruben Liversage took the Disturbed version of the song for inspiration and decided to perform it.
If you can recall, this version starts an octave lower than the original and finished two octaves up. The range is something very few people would be able to accomplish.
Very quickly, as the video starts, you realize that you’re about to see a 16-year-old pull it off!
Liversage starts off the song nailing those low notes. He has a couple dancing around him on the stage while he is hiding behind the blinding lights. Maybe this is Draiman singing? You can’t see anyone clearly, but it sure sounds like him.
With the dancers showing off their talents as well, you can sense that this isn’t just going to be someone doing karaoke, but rather this is going to be a production.
Liversage steps forward and his look is revealed.
He couldn’t be further from Drainman’s metal look with snakebite piercings. He’s wearing a navy uniform and looks very dapper.
With his fist clenched, he powers through the song.
Behind him, more and more dancers, that are also his choir, are assembling. There must be 40-50 people behind Liversage, and the production keeps getting more exciting.
You just can’t believe this kid is 16 and that this is a high school production. It looks like primetime television.
Liversage comes at this song with confidence and has the stage presence of a seasoned pro.
He conveys the emotion of the lyrics, and you can’t help but be captivated.
This performance has been viewed over 1.5 million times since it was uploaded in 2016. Some folks have commented on the dancing choir as being horrible, and if they hadn’t been there, the performance would have been better.
Maybe that has some truth, but not one person doesn’t admit to the great singing talent of Ruben Liversage.
One comment posted says,
“If that young man doesn’t become a professional singer, I will be very sad and disappointed.”
