Teen becomes school legend with Ed Sheeran cover on piano
Ed Sheeran is a great singer. So many singers perform covers of his songs.
Some do an okay job. Some sing it really well. And then there are some singers who blow it out of the water.
One of those singers is Payton Kemp.
Payton Kemp is a 19-year-old singer from American Fork, Utah.
“His musical talents were first discovered by his grandmother when he was the young age of 3, and since then he has sung in front of thousands and has been a guest soloist on albums of other artists,” as written on his bio.
Thank goodness for his grandmother’s eye for spotting real talent or we wouldn’t be able to witness this performance now!
Ever since his discovery, he has been busy honing his musical talent. In fact, he was cast as Young Tarzan in Tuacahn Amphitheater’s first Disney Broadway Show when he was nine years old. And he was also cast as Admetus in âCats” and as Flounder in Tuacahnâs âThe Little Mermaid.â
All his hard work paid off.
When he was 12 years old, he won Dixie’s Got Talent. Dixie’s Got Talent is a region-wide performance highlighting the talents of Washington County residents and Dixie State University students. And in 2013, he bested all the other talented contestants to win the entire competition.
In order to win the competition, he knew he had to wow the audience because their vote counted for half the points. He nailed his performance with a mash-up of two songs, âOne Thingâ and âWhat Makes You Beautiful,â from then-popular group, One Direction.
“Payton loves to act but winning Dixie’s Got Talent, [singing] in front of an audience and own the stage is where he loves to be. He was born with an angelic voice and he has been told, [since he was little], that he will do something big with his voice someday. Be on America’s Got Talent, American Idol, or be the next Justin Bieber,” Leanne K wrote about Payton. “And even after hearing these things for years, Payton continues to be a humble boy.”
And he continues to perform and share his talent with the world.
In 2015, he joined his school’s talent show to share his talent once again. This time, he sang “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran is a great singer and his songs are very popular. Few singers can really pull it off.
And wow, did Payton pull it off!
“You’ve seen his YouTube video. You’ve seen him win Dixie’s Got Talent. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Payton Kemp!” the host introduced him before his performance.
And, unlike his winning performance in 2013, this time, he played the piano during his performance. Wow. Is this guy out to win it or what?
The audience, which included students at the school and their parents, school faculty and administration, stayed silent while they watched him perform.
It’s such a joy to watch Payton perform.
He really gets lost in the song and forgets that there’s an audience watching him sometimes. That’s a true mark of a genuine artist, who focuses on the art.
When he finished singing, he was met with thunderous applause from the audience. And being the humble kid that he is, he simply walked away with a smile.
