Teen wrestling champion tackles man trying to kidnap children at a store
If you saw someone getting abducted, would you dare step in and catch the perpetrator?
In these kinds of scary situations, the natural response of people is to save themselves and flee as far away from the conflict as possible. It will be very difficult to muster the courage to step in and fight against the bad guys.
If it was a family member or someone very dear to you, it would be possible that you might end up going in to prevent the abductor to get his way. But, if it were a stranger, the usual response we see is stepping away from the potential danger.
However, one brave teen boy did the unbelievable when he saw a man trying to kidnap children at a store in La Cruces, New Mexico.
Canaan Bower, 16 years old, champion wrestler and high school student at Mayfield High School, was passing by a store near his residence when he noticed a commotion just outside the establishment. One man was trying to grab a toddler and two more kids, while the children’s mother is giving it her all to fight him off.
The instinctive reaction of humans would be to run away, but the teen did something not anybody would dare to do.
He ran towards the attacker, tackled him, and pinned him on the ground. He did not let go of the perpetrator until cops arrived to cuff him and take him to the police station.
It was like a scene from an action movie, but it all happened in real life. Canaan never let the man go until it was time for him to be arrested, which resulted in the safety of the children that the attacker was trying to abduct in front of the kids’ mother.
The attacker is 22-year-old Daniel Arroyo Beltran from Phoenix.
The children’s mother just went out of the bus and was trying to get her kids together before going into the food mart, when she noticed Beltran looking at them differently. A few moments later, the man suddenly grabbed the 2-year-old whom she was holding. He also was trying the other two kids, a 9-year-old and a one-year-old that the woman was carrying.
It all happened so fast, and the woman almost lost her kids if not for the intervention of the teen boy. Canaan was simply passing by at the right place and at the right time.
Beltran was unlucky because Canaan, a wrestling champ, saw him while trying to kidnap the children.
Canaan Bower won the District 3-5A championship in the 285-pound (129-kilogram) heavyweight division, and later competed at the state tournament. He is not just any kid. He has the strength needed to help the weak, and he used it in the right way.
Canaan’s father, Troy, is extremely proud of his son, although he worries about him a lot. He is hailed as a hero and has every right to be.
“You fear for your own child’s safety in that situation,” Troy said. “You don’t know if this guy’s maybe got a gun or a knife — you don’t know what this guy’s capable of.”
