Two teens shop and deliver groceries to elderly neighbors in self-isolation
These Maryland sophomores have started a help service so that the vulnerable can get their groceries and supplies
It can’t be emphasized enough how hard it is to be an elderly person in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Along with the immunocompromised, you’re at the highest risk from the deadly virus.
Thankfully, there are things that restore our faith in humanity. The young people are out and about, putting themselves at risk so their seniors don’t have to. Taking the brunt of the pandemic all for the safety of their grandparents and other members of the vulnerable population.
Dhruv Pai and Matthew Casertano are residents of Maryland. They were each out doing errands for their grandparents, knowing how vulnerable they are during the pandemic
It then dawned on Dhruv that if the pandemic was creating this problem for his grandparents, then it’s surely the same story for other elderly like them.
His friend Matthew Casertano came to the same realization. Someone needed to give the seniors a bigger helping hand if they want to survive amid the grasp that Covid-19 had laid on society.
And what an absolutely Kingly move from Dhruv and Matthew
Matthew and Dhruv being around was a saving grace for Jimmy Kraft, a 73-year old resident and retired grandfather. The service that the two sophomore boys had just created, “Teens Helping Seniors” was taking off.
Kraft also has a handicapped grandson to take care of. So Dhruv and Matthew showed up at just the right time. They then brought the groceries that Kraft needed right to his doorstep, sparing him the trouble of going out during a pandemic.
With brave spirits and the surefire confidence that they could keep doing this, Dhruv and Matthew began to think bigger
They set up an email, [email protected], encouraging any more young would-be volunteers to contact them if they fancy helping. Dhruv says a Google form is in the works too.
The two were already good friends at their school, and with classes cancelled, they had a lot of free time to talk and think about things. Dhruv explains in an interview with MyMCMedia :
“My grandparents are in a vulnerable age, their vulnerable population, so are my neighbors. So they didn’t want to go to the grocery store to get groceries. So I offered to do it for them and then I realized a lot of people could be in a similar situation. That’s what incentivized me to create such a service.”
The teens even offer porch or curb-side pickup when they deliver the supplies, keeping in mind social distancing. And just to be extra safe, they also wipe-down the grocery bags before handing them over.
Making a difference, one grocery list at a time
Within 3 days, they’ve already gotten more help on board from Maryland and Washington D.C. Their offer to volunteer buying supplies for their state’s elderly folk is nothing short of respectable.
We have to hand them props too for starting a service like this at sophomore age – complete with the option to contact by email! Dhruv and Matthew’s consideration and thoughtfulness are just what we needed to see at a time like this.
Down below is the video where you can watch these two heroes talk about their service themselves. Consider sharing this article too. Who knows? It could get the attention of more volunteers to help out Dhruv and Matthew.
