Nowadays, on YouTube, you can pretty much find any video you’re looking for – and millions more that you’re not.

One type of video that’s doing well at the moment is the “urban exploring” video, where YouTubers will visit cool and interesting parts of the world, like abandoned homes, rare natural elements, and crazy hiking trails.

Trevor Costelloe is a producer of urban exploring videos, and shares his visits to abandoned hospitals, prisons and shopping malls on his channel to his 9,000 subscribers.

It’s clear that Costelloe loves visiting unused and uninhabited places, and, as you can imagine, it’s rare that he’ll ever come across another living thing while he checks out a location. So when he found not one, but three stray dogs at an abandoned water park, that in itself was unusual enough.

But then Costelloe discovered something alarming: one of the dogs was drowning.

The water park in question was based in San Diego, and had been closed for more than a decade when Costelloe and his friend, Dave, went to visit it.

They were filming the trip for Costelloe’s YouTube channel, and 30 minutes in, they zoomed in on a dog in the distance that was staring at them.

At first, they thought the husky was a threat. But it turned out that he was actually trying to communicate with them – his friend was in danger, and he needed their help!

Of course, like most teenage boys, Costelloe and his friend decide to “go and meet the dog and see what happens”. That’s when they discovered yet another stray, this time a pitbull, who was looking at them with just as much urgency.

Then both dogs ran over to the boys and started to circle them. One dog even jumped up at Dave’s back. They were trying to send the teens over to their drowning friend.

Luckily, Costelloe suddenly picked up on a sloshing noise coming from a nearby pool. He said, “Dude, what’s in the water over there?”

And thank goodness they decide to investigate.

The situation quickly became serious when Costelloe noticed that there was a dog in the water – and it was in distress. He said, “We’ve got to save it,” then dropped the camera and rushed over to help.

Dave continued to record as Costelloe crouched at the side of the pool, then carefully took hold of one of the dog’s front paws. He dragged the dog to the side of the pool and managed to heave it out, while the other dogs waited nervously in the background.

In that short moment, Costelloe saved the drowning dog’s life. The pooch gave himself a shake, and his doggo friends crowded around him, jumping for joy that he was okay.

The boys laughed in relief, and even managed to give the pitbull a pet, who looked at them gratefully for rescuing his friend.

It really was a miracle that Costelloe happened to be in the area to save the dog from an unfortunate fate. Looking back on the incident, he wrote: “I can’t believe how lucky we were. Right place, right time.”

Thanks to Costelloe, the three stray friends can enjoy many more adventures together at their unconventional home. Hopefully they remember to stay away from the water in the future.
