It all began with one police officer in June of 2018 – and he had no idea how far it would go.

That officer was Alexander Mena, a recruiting team deputy with the Bexar County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office. Bexar loved posting lip sync videos to Snapchat (hey, this was before Tik Tok was cool).

One day he sent a video of himself singing the Kumbia Kings’ “Fuiste Mala” to his sergeant and it ended up on the department’s social media page.

The rest is history.

That video earned over a million views in a few months. But perhaps, more importantly, it challenged other officers to show off their silly side and join him in a challenge.

“We wanted some positive stuff to come to the sheriff’s office. With some of the things that happen in law enforcement and with the media … we wanted something more positive and for the community and our deputies to kind of connect together. … I did not think that it was going to blow up the way that it did,” Mena told ABC News.

At first, it was a Texas thing. But then it went national and cops around the country were posting solo and group performances – some simple and endearing, others elaborate and choreographed. Many went viral.

One of those videos was posted by officers from the Cleveland, Tennessee PD. Their song was an unexpected choice – Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” and their location was a stately home, presumably within the city limits.

After about 10 seconds into the video, there were plenty of viewers prepared to pick up and move to “the other Cleveland” – or at least speed through.

“A couple of your police officers made me wanna come speed in Clevland just to get pulled over by them.
– Just kidding. Great Video”

The production value was high, the officers were entertaining, and it’s an all-around fun video to watch as each man gets his turn in the spotlight.

Eventually, we end up in the back of the house. It’s getting hot singing about Havana, so the officers take their moves to the pool.

“This has got to be one of the best responses to the challenge yet!! Dang man you have some FINE looking men in Cleveland. Making me consider taking my aunt’s advice to move there,” said one viewer.

And they do a little relaxing as well.

Clearly they haven’t been called to the house for a disturbance – but they’re about to make one!

And while everybody’s talking about one dreamy officer, can we just mention how much we love this guy?!

“Your dept needs to put out a calendar..just saying. Fantastic job.”

AGREED.

This certainly isn’t the way most of us normally view police officers. Seeing them sing and dance was certainly eye-opening. And it’s a good reminder that they’re people who can be silly and fun-loving and have a sense of humor – just not typically when they’re on the job.

But we imagine these officers weren’t even in full gear throughout this shoot – or if they were that those walkie-talkies are waterproof!

The Lip Sync Battle was later co-opted by CBS who turned into a television show where viewers at home could vote on the top video. Our clever Cleveland officers didn’t win, but they certainly made the Top 10 in our hearts!
