Texas homecoming queen shares crown and title with friend who has Down syndrome

Victory is always sweeter when it’s shared with someone as deserving.

Homecoming has always been one of the buzziest moments of our scholastic lives. And it only gets bigger as the most anticipated award is given to one of our classmates.

While these events only name one couple to be the Homecoming King and Queen, a school in Texas named two queens last 2019.

Two seniors were nominated to be homecoming queens.

The S&S Consolidated High School in Sadler, Texas was choosing between Trinity Arrington and Emily Petty.

And while Arrington was awarded the crown, she has always rooted for Emily to win. This is why, breaking all protocols, she relinquished her crown and gave it to Petty instead.

Arrington had her reasons, however.

“I decided to give my crown to my sweet friend Emily because she’s always wanted to be a princess,” Arrington told the news outlet KXII “So I decided she deserved it.”

Petty, who has Down syndrome, became friends with Arrington when Arrington spent her lunch period in the special education classroom. The two have since become friends for nearly a year.

Petty said that she loves Arrington.

In the video of the coronation, Arrington can be seen crying as she approached to receive her crown. But on her way back she carefully removed the crown from her head and then walked toward Petty.

She then gave her crown to Petty who was beyond excited when she realized what was happening. The two then posed for pictures, showing how much they appreciate each other.

“We got to hold hands and we waved at everyone and we blew kisses to everyone,” Arrington said as they relished the moment. “They were really excited for us.” Meanwhile, Petty said that she also blew kisses to her friends.

Arrington shared that the moment made her happy.

She mentioned that it made her cry when she gave up her crown but she couldn’t imagine sharing it with anyone else.

She said that the night was unforgettable because she and Petty got to be queens together. For her, it was the best part of the experience.

The video was posted on Facebook where it quickly became viral.

Arrington’s win came as a surprise because she admitted that she was campaigning for Petty when the nominations came out.

People reacted to the video and their friend also admitted that the whole event made them cry. It only goes to show that compassion, kindness, and inclusivity go a long way.

Just last May, a school in Virginia named two students with Down Syndrome as their high school’s prom king and queen. Anna Anderson and Zane Wales claimed their crowns proudly.

“They see these kids every day,” Heather Hevener, a teacher from Jefferson Forest High School said. “They walk the same halls with these same kids, and they just feel like they’re part of them, so they wanted to make sure that they also really felt part of them.”
