Texas Lowe’s store doesn't just hire veteran – but also his loyal service dog

Men and women put their lives at risk every day just to keep us safe. Each one of these individuals deserves admiration and respect. But sadly, many of our veterans come back from duty only to have a hard time adjusting because they feel ignored or left out.

Luckily, there are still a few companies that want to help these brave men and women. Over the years, Lowe’s Home Improvement has a reputation of going out of their way for hiring veterans. But one store in Texas went as far as not only hiring a man who served our country but also his dog.

He’s limited in what he can do

Clay Luthy is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He valiantly served the country in deployments not once, not twice, but three times. During his service, he suffered multiple leg injuries. That led to him having many surgeries, including one that prevents him from bending at the knee.

He needed something else to do

Because of these physical challenges, Clay couldn’t enlist again. But he needed to find another job, one he could perform in spite of his physical disabilities. The entire time, his devoted pooch stayed by his side.

Accompanied by his devoted canine

Charlotte, Clay’s service dog, tagged along wherever he went. Charlotte, a golden retriever, went through special training so she could support Clay. If he falls down and can’t get up, Charlotte is there to help him. Since Clay doesn’t know when he’ll need his furry friend’s help, Charlotte has to be by his side pretty much all the time.

Even going to interviews

So, when Clay had an interview at Lowe’s, Charlotte trotted along. He wanted to be upfront with the store, making sure they wouldn’t have a problem with his pup. And guess what? The manager embraced the idea of having Charlotte accompany her owner, saying she’s 100 percent welcome there.

Charlotte isn’t alone

The store manager talked about a handful of other service dogs that work with their owners at various Lowe’s stores. Just a few weeks later, Clay got the job. Needless to say, this was probably some of the best news he’d received for quite some time. Since he’s a disabled vet, he says he hates just sitting around at home not doing anything.

Performing meaningful work

Clay wants to stay active in his community. One way he’s doing that is through working at Lowe’s. He was pumped to begin his job. It sounds as though Lowe’s has been a great place to work, too, since they gave Clay a part-time schedule both he and Charlotte loved.

A perfect situation for everyone

Charlotte accompanies Clay to work every shift. She’s always there if he needs her but she also gets plenty of rest during the week thanks to the flexible hours. It’s a win-win for everyone. His furry friend got a work vest with Lowe’s on it, which Clay made especially for her. The customers like to stop by to greet the pair and of course, show a little extra love to Charlotte.

A happy life

It’s a moving story for everyone, especially since an employer is going out of their way for veterans. Heroic members of the military such as Clay have sacrificed so much just to keep us safe. It’s only fitting for them to be paid back for their selfless act. Lowe’s is setting a great example for everyone.
