Therapy dogs help comfort grieving families after Texas elementary school shooting

A tragedy took place on May 24, a Tuesday, at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. A gunman entered, killing 19 children and two teachers. The residents are in shock with many in mourning.

People from all corners of the city arrived offering prayers and vigils, even petting therapy dogs that arrived.

The dogs come from several organizations and are there to offer all their support.

Schools, hospitals, churches, and even parks see men and women petting and hugging the dogs.

Lutheran Church Charities (LCC) sent eight of their K-9 Comfort Dogs the same day the incident happened. They were contacted by a local church and city officials.

Eight golden retrievers named Elijah, Miriam, Abner, Triton, Gabriel, Joy, Cubby, and Devorah were the first to arrive. Five other golden K-9 Comfort Dogs were already hard at work.

Crosses were setup for victims in the town square.

“Eight LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams stayed in the square to offer comfort to the community as they searched for the names of their loved ones. We listened to stories, prayed and cried together. Please continue to keep Uvalde, TX and our ministry in your prayers as we continue to be present for those who are suffering and in need here,” posted LCC K-9 Comfort Dog.

Crisis Response Canines sent their own teams of handlers with therapy dogs from around the country.

Tarik, Exon, Axel, Zodiac, Murphy and Macy set out to cuddle with those who needed them.

They wrote, “Family, friends, community, Robb Elementary School, hospital and First Responders remain the priority. Sadly services have commenced and these assignments are quite sad and emotional. Again, CRC will not break that sacred trust and disclose intimate personal and painful details. We simply ask that you pray that we are able to comfort those who mourn.”

Therapy Animals of San Antonio is a local nonprofit. They too sent a team of therapy dogs.

The nonprofit said, “Our Crisis Animal Response Teams (CARE) were in Uvalde this week providing comfort to children, families and counselors affected by this terrible tragedy.”

Another therapy ministry called Canines 4 Christ arrived with six teams.

One team called Team Grayson shared their experience on Facebook.

The story is that there were three girls who were the girl’s cousin and as they pet Grayson, they began to share. They painted angels and gave it to their parents, while another lit a candle.

Another spoke of the paintings with the little girl’s name and as they shared, the girls got more excited. Grayson made them laugh and he got treats as a result.

“I saw our program through a wider lens today. God has a plan for each of our dogs to serve in meaningful ways. All we humans have to do is be obedient and let our dogs guide us,” they wrote.

Other organizations gave out stuffed animals that the children could bring home. Therapy dogs are still around as funerals are held for the victims.

The teams, handlers, and dogs are all heroes in their own right. They stepped up to comfort all those affected by this horrible tragedy.

No one is forgotten. Everyone is loved.
