5 things your dog wants you to know after they pass away
Coping with the loss of a dog is hard. Not only do you miss them, but everyday things can remind you of them and bring you to tears. Worse yet, some dog owners feel guilty and think maybe they could have done more to help their dog or to make them more comfortable in their last days. Here are five things that your dog would want you to know when they die.
1. They loved you more than you could ever know
The unselfish nature of dogs makes them a perfect companion. They are quick to forgive and desire nothing more than to spend time with you. This bond is often deeper than most relationships between humans – with the exception of perhaps the love between a child and a parent.
You should keep your dog’s deep love for you in mind when they are no longer there to help bring you some comfort and the strength to move forward.
2. It is okay to love other animals after they pass
Many dogs are very unselfish. Though some dog owners might argue this fact, when it comes down to it, a dog is almost always willing to share their owner with another pet. A great way to honor your dog is to show the love you had for them with another pet who needs a home.
3. They don’t want you to have regrets
While your biggest hope is that your dog will live a healthy life free of pain, we all know that is not always the case. The best you can do is be there for your dog if they get sick. They appreciate that more than anything else and don’t want you to have any regrets about the time that you did spend with them.
4. They understand that you would have been with them every second if you could
Your dog does not judge you if you did not spend as much time with them as you could have. Life happens. Maybe you had to work or skipped a daily walk here and there for whatever reason. Ultimately, it is what you did when you were with your dog to show that you loved them – the everyday, normal things – that were truly cherished and important.
5. They know that you loved them and did everything you could for them
When it comes to communication, dogs are pretty simple for the most part. You usually show your dog how much you love them by the way you talk to them or treat them while you are around them. And really, this is pretty much all they needed. Your very presence always assured them that they were loved.
When all is said and done, your dog would want you to be happy. In the past, when you were sad, your dog probably responded with a reassuring headbutt, doggie kisses, or by simply sitting by your side.
And while this might make you miss your dog even more, remember that your dog wanted you to be happy – which is why they did those things to begin with.
