For most students, completing one degree over four years is a challenge. For Jack Rico, getting four degrees in two years was child’s play.

Imagine being so smart that you earned a college degree aged 13. Now times that by four, and you have Jack Rico, a child genius in California.

Rico recently earned four associate degrees from Fullerton College. On graduation day, he was many years younger than most of the other graduates. He was also the youngest student ever to graduate from the college.

Of course, there are child geniuses all over the world. But many of them wait to attend college at the appropriate age (and even then, many also only study one degree.) So what made Jack Rico a college graduate at such a young age?

Rico’s mother, Ru Andrade, realized that Rico was significantly more advanced than other kids when he was barely out of diapers. By the time that Rico hit the third grade, she had decided to start homeschooling him. Prior to this, she also encouraged his learning with rewards. For instance, when he was three, he asked to go and visit The White House for his birthday. Ru Andrade said that they could go if he was able to memorize the names of all of the presidents. In a week’s time, Rico shocked her by listing not just all of the presidents but also all of the vice presidents.

Thanks to Ru Andrade’s stellar tutelage, Rico was able to learn at a rapid pace, giving him everything he needed to begin higher education before puberty.

The day of Rico’s graduation was affected by coronavirus. Luckily, Fullerton was able to host a socially distanced ceremony.

And later, the child’s family and friends congratulated the pint-sized graduate by driving by his home with notes on their cars and cheering him.

Rico’s education is not complete yet. In the fall, the child will begin studying at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

He will be taking history classes to begin with. He is also attending on a full scholarship.

He’s currently undecided about a major and not certain about his future career. Rico has stated that a job he’d like to have is screenwriting.

However, the degrees that Rico has already earned will enable him to work in a wide range of fields, should screenwriting become tiresome.

His degrees are in history, human expression, social behavior and social science. He also managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA in all of these subjects.

While Rico is undoubtedly gifted, in some ways, he’s a lot like any other 13-year-old kid. For example, his favorite pastime is playing video games, and he gets on his sister’s nerves a lot (and vice versa.)

A report of Rico then made its way onto YouTube, where it made a huge impact.

In less than two weeks, the story has gained over 435,000 views. It also has more than 15,000 likes and 2,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:

Perhaps Jack Rico will become a screenwriter. Perhaps he’ll become a historian. Or he could go on to do many other things. He definitely has plenty of time and a range of options! He also has an incredibly supportive mother by his side, which can make all the difference!
