Emma has always been bright for her age. But when her mother fell down the stairs, she impressed everyone.
At the start of this story, Catherine was the mother of one child, three-year-old Emma. She was also expecting a second baby, a boy.
Shortly after she returned home from the hospital for a check up, something shocking happened.
The mother tried walking down the stairs. She slipped and fell all the way down.
Catherine had badly hurt herself. She could not get up and was hoping that her unborn child was ok. Luckily, Emma heard the commotion and came into the hallway to see what happened.
Instead of crying or panicking, the three-year-old went straight to the phone.
The toddler dialed 999 (this happened in Britain, where 999 is the emergency call number). Emma told the operator that she needed help for her mom. Soon, Emma was through to the ambulance service.
The call handler at the ambulance service, Sarah Morris, asked what had happened. Emma responded by saying “Mummy fall down the stairs.”
Then Emma told Morris that there was also a baby with her.
So the call handler asked Emma to go up to her mom. The girl responded that she was already with her.
Morris then asked how old the baby was. Emma responded by saying “It’s in mummy’s tummy.”
Then the call handler asked Emma how her mother had hurt herself, wondering whether or not she had sustained an injury anywhere other than her head. Emma said that she had only hurt her head.
But then Emma told Morris that her mom was “going back to sleep now.”
The call handler told Emma that an ambulance was on its way. She said that she was going to stay on the phone with Emma and make sure that her mom was still breathing.
At one point, Catherine regained consciousness. Emma told Morris what was happening. The call handler told Emma to tell her mom to stay really still and that the ambulance was coming. Morris then heard Emma say those exact words to the mother. The call handler told Emma that she was such a clever girl.
The phone line went quiet for a few minutes. Morris was worried, so she asked Emma what was happening. Emma responded that she was giving her mom a cuddle.
Pretty soon, the first responders arrived. They took Catherine and Emma to the hospital.
At the hospital, things got tense. The fall induced a premature labor. Luckily, the doctors were able to give Catherine some drugs that prevented her boy from being born 7 weeks early.
Eventually, they were all able to go home.
Catherine was amazed at what her three-year-old child had done. She and her then-unborn baby literally owed the toddler their lives!
Pretty soon, the recording of Emma and the ambulance operator’s call appeared on YouTube.
In no time at all, it went viral. To date, it has gained over 11.3 million views. It also has more than 273,000 likes and 11,500 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Once Catherine was home, word started spreading of Emma’s amazing actions. In fact, the South Western Ambulance Service decided to even give the girl a bravery certificate.
Now, Catherine, Emma and the baby boy are all safe and well.
