5-year-old wins dance competition with a mesmerizingly “angelic” performance
Audrina Mossembekker is the very definition of a tiny dancer. But don’t let her stature fool you – she’s full of fire.
While some people might feel a little cringe-y when they see the world of children’s dance, it’s not so different from any other sport – and it certainly requires the same physical and mental discipline. The uniforms are just a little more…sparkly.
Mossembekker is just 5 years old, but already the Instagram account (and persona) her parents have built for her has garnered the attention of over 14K fans. And neither they nor their daughter are messing around when it comes to image – it’s all winning all the time.

Her latest title “Rainbow Dancer of the Year “was earned at the 2020 Rainbow National Dance Competition in San Gabriel, California in early July. It’s one of many regional, branded competitions for kids of all ages and there are many categories.
Mossembekker’s victory came in the “Top Rising Starz Solo 5 & Under” category – she was the only one to place in that category, so it’s unclear how many entered. The five-year-old attends the Orange County Performance Arts Academy where she works with choregrapher and teacher Rachel Ruhe.

For this competition, the young girl performed a lyrical routine to a cover of Sarah Maclachlans’s “Arms Of An Angel.”
Dressed in a white leotard with an airy train, she was able to seemingly float across the stage.
Her performance is even more impressive since she had to learn online in recent months.
Without a dance studio or hands-on instruction, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the instruction of young dancers around the world.
But that sure didn’t stop her from working on her flexibility!

While there’s not a lot of usage of the stage, lyrical dance is all about telling a story – and Mossenbekker can do it in a limited area.
And it’s not just her ability to maneuver herself acrobatically that won her first place. Her movements are precise and elegant.
We do feel a little inadequate with regard to our arm and core strength when we watch her, but it’s important to remember she’s just 5 and has plenty of time to practice.
In an Instagram caption, her parents described her victories that day (in her voice, of course):
“I received a Double Platinum, Overall High Point and Mini Dancer of the Year!”

That’s a pretty impressive haul!
All in all, we can’t be anything but impressed at the athleticism and discipline it takes to walk on stage with such confidence and skill at such a young age. Even if Mossembekker doesn’t go on to be a dancer, she’ll certainly have some incredible life skills to draw on.

It appears that this competition was the last at which she’ll be performing this particular routine, so be sure to watch her Instagram page for new performances and competition entries.
Everything is uncertain in 2o20, but hopefully dancers can get back into the studio and on stage as soon as things are safe.
