Dogs will fetch just about anything if given the opportunity – a steak bone, a stick, or even a massive pile of dirt.

Because we all need dogs with dirt beards to give us our daily dose of smiles, right?

Sometimes, though, our furry besties will pick up random things that have no business being in their mouth.

Like, say for example – a sopping wet kitten!

But we can certainly forgive this tiny dog for fetching a cute little kitty because her heart was certainly in the right place.

Monica Burks often lets her sweet pooch, Hazel, outside to go potty, and she’s normally a well-behaved girl.

But since it was raining cats and dogs outside that particular day, the doggy took the weather a little bit too literally.

She was the dog part of the equation, so there must be a cat!

Whereas most dogs would do a quick touchdown in the grass when it’s raining outside and then skedaddle back to dry land, Hazel’s mommy instincts took her in an entirely different direction.

It all started when the tiny pup heard a sound coming from underneath the shed and she immediately went to investigate.

As soon as this little do-gooder saw the abandoned kitten mewing in the pouring rain, she did what any Yorkie-Chihuahua-poodle mix from Abilene, Texas would do.

She immediately coaxed the kitty out of her hiding place and brought it home to her human.

However, it wasn’t as easy as it first looked. This cat was even smaller than she was! A lot of patience would be needed on Hazel’s part to get the job done.

So, Hazel put on her Big Sister hat and helped the rain-soaked furball jump over the giant cracks in the sidewalk, wade through puddles of water in a jungle of asphalt, and she even encouraged the little treasure to climb up that seemingly impossible mountain of concrete.

Monica, meanwhile, was filming the entire mini-adventure movie on her smartphone. This was just too good not to share!

When the kitten struggled to get past the final challenge, Hazel gently grabbed her by the scruff and helped her cross the finish line.

The kitten was safe at last and she could finally shake off all the bad memories of the past! The two played and cuddled as if they’d always been best friends, and thankfully the good news didn’t stop there.

“There must be something called pure love. I saw Hazel’s maternal instincts come to light.”

Monica could have just taken the stray to the shelter and let them deal with it, but she figured out a better way to make things right.

Her brother, Michael, offered to adopt the kitty and keep her in the family!

The adorable stray was a stray no more, and now she even has a new name – Sheba!

Who knew that a dog going on a pee break could somehow transform into an epic hero’s journey?
