Tiny home village offers transitional housing for the homeless to get their lives back on track

There’s nothing better than going home after a long and tiring day. You prepare dinner, take a bath, and finally relax before going to sleep. This is what most people do on a normal day, however, this isn’t the case for homeless people.

It is a sad fact that the number of homeless people is steadily growing not only in America but also all over the world.

A study was made in 2017 which states:

“There are an estimated 553,742 people in the United States experiencing homelessness on a given night, according to the most recent national point-in-time estimate (January 2017). This represents a rate of approximately 17 people experiencing homelessness per every 10,000 people in the general population.”

The government has multiple programs to aid homelessness such as a variety of housing programs. Over the last decade, a greater emphasis has been placed to provide permanent housing solutions for homeless people.

Thankfully, there are several private organizations that do whatever they can to help people living on the streets such as Debbie O’Malley who has long dreamt to make her vision into a reality.

The solution? Tiny homes.

Debbie is the Bernalillo County Commissioner who has been working since 2016 to put up a tiny community for homeless people.

Tiny homes have become a very popular choice for anyone who wants to promote sustainability. Most are made with sustainable materials and since the space is small, it will also allow you to reduce energy usage.

It is also very affordable so you don’t have to pay a huge sum when paying it upfront. Which means you can live mortgage-free!

Debbie had this idea since and now she’s finally seeing the fruits of her labor.

Finally, the tiny community for homeless people is now open and accepting residents. It was built on an unused lot with tiny homes and comfort facilities that every resident can use.

She also mentioned that her community’s hard work was vital for the project’s success. Back in 2016, the voters had to approve the $2 million bond and choose between: help the homeless or deny the money spent on the cause.

Ultimately, they chose to help the homeless.

“I hope that people see the story and they see what’s happening and they’re like, ‘You know what, we could support something like this in our community.’”

The tiny homes only cost $30 a month as rent, so that people can find a good job and get their lives back on track. Debbie also said that the project would hopefully be complete this June, but of course, the idea is not for people to stick around.

Hopefully, by giving the homeless a place to sleep and shower, they’ll have a higher likelihood of finding work.

The world would be a better place if there would be more people like Debbie who went out of her way and did whatever she can to help people in need. Helping isn’t always about giving money or temporary needs, it’s about giving someone another chance at life.
