You can buy a “home in a box” for under $5k – would you try it?
You get what you pay for – and when you’re talking about a house, you’re lucky if you even get that!
But with the rise of the tiny house phenomenon over the last decade, some people are seeking less and less. In fact, they’re even trying their hand at building their own homes.
And, as usual, websites like Amazon have tried to make it easier for people to get their hands on the materials. But while many of the “houses” didn’t exactly fit into the Prime Shipping and DIY-with-ease expectations of Amazon shoppers and are no longer for sale there, home models like the Lillevilla Escape are still making people think about the possibilities.
Whether you want to move off the grid or simply build a “man cave” or “she shed” in your own backyard, it’s tempting to think about these DIY kits, especially when the Lillevilla Escape is still for sale for under $5k on some websites.
Even if you own a plot of land somewhere serene, there are places that would like to sell you this one-room, 113-square-foot “cabin.”
Now, it weighs a good 2800 pounds and while shipping can be free if you find the right deal, don’t expect it to come with a foundation. Or more windows. Those are extra.
More interior walls will cost you extra as well, but in a 113-square-foot cabin creating an extra room would be quite a feat!
To be fair, you will get a roof over your head and one window (plus a door that lets the light in) for $4,790.
There’s even an overhang and small porch where you can plop a chair or two in case things get stuffy in there. So as long as the lack of electricity and running water aren’t a deal-breaker, you’re in business
We’ve seen plenty of people use them as gardening sheds or even 2-season offices, especially in these new work-from-home days when the lack of a bathroom seems like a small price to pay for some peace and quiet for as long as your laptop battery lasts.
You could even use the cabin as a play space for kids or a spot for reading. And just because it doesn’t come with perks doesn’t mean you can’t add them on later.
Now, if you’ve ever been overly frustrated by an IKEA kit, this is not the project for you.
It does not come assembled and while there are plenty of videos available, you’ll probably want to have put together more than a bookcase in your life if you’re going to spend 5K on a DIY cabin.
But no one’s stopping you if you want over 32800lbs of wood dropped off at your house!
While the ads say it only requires basic tools, we all know we’d rather not have a roof collapse on us, even if it is only 14′ by 15′ (the interior measures 12’5″ x 9’1″).
One of those “tools” is “another adult” so we’d recommend making it a handy one. But after that, if you have a level, a hammer, a ladder, pliers, a saw, a drill, a Phillips head screwdriver, a measuring tape, and a good sense of humor, then we say go for it!
While we know we’d never get it done, we’ll admit that the photos of the ideal finished product made us take more than one look.
So what do you think? If you had the time, space, and skill (as well as the zoning laws on your side), could you come up with a use for this $5k tiny cabin?
If so, be sure to scroll down below for a 6-minute assembly video. The music alone might be enough to sell you on the idea.
