Two tiny homes with an open-air sunroom create a dreamy home for a family of four

“Family” and “tiny house” don’t seem to go well together.

One of the assumptions when it comes to the trend of tiny houses is that it is only perfect for those who are living solo.

Tiny houses are known for their over-utilization of space and unapologetic economy of space that it can be a bit difficult for families to emulate or adapt into. Architect Brian Crabb from Viva Collectiv, however, showed people it can be done.

“Ohana”, as one animated movie popularized, means family in the native Hawai’ian language.

It is also the name of Crabb’s tiny house project situated in Portland, Oregon. The house, at its core, is made of 24×8 trailers that are connected by a sunroom in between them.

In total, the house has just under 600 square feet of usable space that can fit the needs of a small family. While it can be small by others’ standards, the Ohana is a good way to live with a smaller footprint.

The house was designed for a Hawai’ian family.

The young family of four came from the islands and when they moved to Oregon, they quickly missed the sunlight and the weather of the Pacific islands.

Crabb wanted to design a house where the family can enjoy sunlight all year round while also giving each family member a semblance of privacy.

The right trailer holds the living room.

The living room is a quaint space that fits one couch and a long coffee table. It also has an elevated sloped roof to give it a more spacious feel.

To maximize the space, the stair frame also houses some shelves and drawers to add to the total storage.

The right trailer also holds the kids’ bedroom. With the sunroom separating the trailer, the kids can feel that they have their own space.

Meanwhile, the left trailer holds the utility areas.

It has a complete kitchen despite the size. There is a space for the refrigerator, a four-range stove, a sink, and a washer-dryer for the family’s laundry needs.

The toilet and bath is also located on this side of the house. To take advantage of the space, the bathroom has a bathtub with a shower head right above it so whichever way you choose to relax, you can do so.

Finally, the couple’s bedroom is situated at the end of the trailer. The space can fit a queen-sized bed and has windows that can let in a lot of natural light.

The best part about modular houses such as the Ohana is their portability.

People have always imagined living in container box houses to take advantage of such features. The Ohana was eventually sold. The entire house, including the sunroom, was packed up and shipped across the country.

And even with its size, the house can accommodate friends and family. The original owners of the house said they’ve hosted a party with 50 people. The size of the house can leave so much space within the lot that your Ohana can be a little bit bigger when you celebrate.
