Couple lives in tiny house 'submarine' and the interior is impressively cozy

We’ve seen our fair share of creative “tiny” houses already. From yurts to trailer homes, to large sheds and other fun-size living spaces.

But this yellow submarine absolutely wins in the creative and cute categories, and it’s resting in a ‘sea’ of green too.

In Marton, New Zealand, there’s one tiny home in the middle of the great, green stretches of plains and forest. And it looks just about ready to set out to sea.

The architect/engineer for this is Keith, who made the whole thing out of pieces of an old silo – plus some extra components that he happened to have lying about in his home.

It’s not sea-worthy at all, but looking the part is what really matters here.

The level of resourcefulness that Keith had to go to in order to build this is incredible. Everything from the panels, to the hatch, to the windows and the propeller are made of recycled parts. You can’t even tell that it was made from an old silo. It’s also registered on Airbnb, in case you fancy booking a stay here.

Keith made clever use of what he could find for this. Front, bottom and on the sides are old telecom radars and parabolic dishes that he painted yellow. The propeller is an old extractor fan, and the stabilizers and rudders are old solar panels.

That said, you would never know just from looking at them.

If you take a second to view the sides of it, you’ll notice a little silhouette of The Beatles crossing Abbey Road printed onto it. That’s some impressive fan dedication right there.

It wouldn’t be any good if the interior wasn’t livable, and thankfully it very much is! But to get in, you first have to sit back and appreciate the slow, cinematic opening of the hatch. Just as Keith intended.

No shortage of coziness and consistent themes in here. The whole interior is small, but oddly roomy. It’s also littered with as much steampunk aesthetic as possible.

Just because it looks like a submarine, doesn’t mean living in one has to feel like it. There’s no cold, navy-style folding beds in here. Everything you’d need for some unwinding is here.

A couch, a workspace and a fully-functioning kitchen – all done in a fantastic steampunk, Victorian style.

In fact, Keith made absolutely sure that the steampunk Victorian theme was present in every corner. The copper wiring and lining to small windows, the copper-look of the kitchen faucet, the bird cage, and even the diving helmet hanging in a top corner.

The bedroo- oh, excuse me…..Captain, chief engineer and crew’s quarters is right behind the living area. It’s got all the makings of a marine vessel’s sleeping quarters, but it’s way more comfy.

It’s even got some American marine propaganda posters on the wall, because a little bit of immersion is always welcome.

Need a bathroom break? Not to worry, Keith’s Yellow Submarine has you covered. It’s a bit small, and rather unconventionally shaped for a bathroom. Though that’s hardly a negative since the whole bathroom is furnished and designed incredibly well to fit with the rest of the submarine.

There’s hot water in here too, but make sure you can finish showering in 5 minutes if you fancy making the most of it.

And last but not least, the Captain’s quarters.

Keith has not put any of that old telecom equipment to waste. This fully furnished and constructed captain’s quarters looks convincing enough to any guests, and you might not immediately notice the hot tub forming the ceiling.

Old telecom radio devices form a neat stack next to the captain’s chair. So if you’d like (and if Keith allows it, obviously), you could sit in here and pretend to be a submarine captain.

And that’s precisely what people have done, judging from what’s in the guestbook.

Flip through the pages, and it’s pretty clear that Keith’s not-so-little project has really brought out the kid in everyone – including him.

The guestbook is filled with everything from little written stories of submarine crews braving the cold waters, to doodles of giant squid doing battle with the crew. “Kids become adults and adults become kids” in Keith’s own words.
