Butcher shares simple trick to save $80+ every time you buy ribeye steaks from the grocery
Buying meat can rack up a hefty grocery bill. We all love a good pork chop or steak, but our wallets might not.
That’s why when you’re craving for ribeye steak, it might help to know how to get the best value out of your purchase.
Thanks to Butcher Wizard on YouTube, we can all watch this simple way of getting the most value out of a ribeye steak.
This method can save you $80-100 every time you visit the grocery, according to him. But what is this method? And who would’ve guessed that economics and butchering could go hand in hand?
It’s all in how you cut it. In this example, a ribeye steak is $10 a pound if you get yours from Costco.
It costs even more for the same weight at his local grocery: $16 a pound.
If your business or lifestyle sees you buying meat a lot like him, then learning how to budget can really save your life.
As in the demonstration, there’s nothing really too daunting or complicated to follow.
All you’ve got to do is make some clean slices of 1.5 inches or so into the slab of meat, and keep that consistent.
Observe the marbling patterns of the fat and meat, and the quality of it as you slice them.
Cutting your own ribeyes isn’t nearly as hard as you thought, was it?
Learning how to do your own butchering is a highly important tool that’ll save you a lot of money.
These slices of ribeye weigh about a pound each. That’s a lot for just one person already!
When you buy meat at the grocery, you might be paying extra for the labor of processing and butchering it first.
So maybe that’ll put into perspective why doing your own butchering can make such a difference.
By now, you should be close to the end of the slab.
You’re now faced with a small issue: how to get one last steak out of it while making sure the end remains straight and clean after you cut it.
In the video, he simply “squared up” the other end to leave a symmetrical, clean, large steak.
Then he simply cut that remaining steak in half, giving him two more slices similar in portion to the 1.5 inch-thick ones he already had.
You’ll also want to shave off any excess connective tissue or fat to your liking.
The fat will come in handy for some beef tallow if that ever crosses your mind! The presenter even mentions cooking potatoes in it.
So now you have a nice bunch of cleanly cut steaks and some excess fat and trimmings in case you want to make hamburgers.
Doing all of that saved you more money that you might’ve guessed.
In his example, his slab from his Costco was already $6 cheaper per pound than the grocery.
By slicing your own meat to about one pound per steak from the 13 pound slab you started with, you just saved about $80.88 on labor and processing.
Plus, less of the meat went to waste!
