Brilliant pieces of advice from people over 70

Money is a great thing. It can provide safety and allow freedom for us in our lives to do what we like when we like. It can also be a magnifying glass, amplifying the things in our life, good and bad. Greed is amplified for those who are already greedy, and generosity is amplified for those who are already generous. They are just more of what they were before. Money can’t buy everything, however.

Here are some life and money tips from some people who have been around the block (70+).

Keep your bills in check and watch out for debt.

There is always a new and flashy thing that we want (need?). Especially in America, there is always a new way to get ourselves into debt. As debt increases, it gets harder and harder to pay down. When you live below your means, you can set yourself up for a life where you can live with some financial security.

Once we close our eyes for good, nobody is sure about what happens. It is important to enjoy the richness of every moment. Even the tough ones have something to teach us, even it that lesson is simply to appreciate the good ones.

Your body keeps the score.

The book “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel van der Kolk shows how our trauma and mistreatment can stay with us until properly addressed. Besides the physical things like working out and eating healthy, we need to stay healthy mentally FOR our bodies.

Right and wrong are a spectrum.

Nobody is 100% right all of the time. Listen to many sources and take every bit of advice with a grain of salt.

Your kids may be an absolute annoyance, but enjoy the time that you have with them. Eventually, kids become teenagers who become adults. The sports and crying sessions and tantrums are all something you will miss. Enjoy every moment.

Don’t take things too seriously.

Don’t be too serious. We are all gonna die someday, right?

Don’t believe the myth that you must find your dream job.

Sometimes a job is just that, a job. We don’t all get to find a job that we absolutely love, but sometimes it provides the money we need to live the life we want. Don’t think you won’t be happy until you find the perfect job.

Stuff is just stuff.

Don’t spend your life looking to have what everyone else has. Your stuff won’t last forever, and nobody goes to heaven wearing pants. When we allow material possessions to dictate our happiness, we then tie our happiness to those items. If we lose those, we lose happiness. When we allow our lives to be filled elsewhere, we aren’t dependent on things to make us happy.

People are what make life worth living.

Don’t believe the lie that you can do it all by yourself, and you only need you and yours. There is richness in a life of love and relationships. It is the relationships we form and the people that we learn to love and live with that add value.
