YouTuber teaches women how to take decades off their look with a few simple fashion tips

Dominique Sachse identifies herself as “a news anchor and a YouTuber for women in their prime.”

The evening news anchor at Houston’s KPRC Channel 2 has been on the job for 25 years and counting. And her YouTube page has over 1.4 million subscribers, so we figured there was something to it.

Turns out there’s a lot of great stuff on there, including one particularly popular video in which Sachse shows women how to take 10 years off their look with some simple wardrobe tricks.

Don’t sell yourself short

So many of us think that getting older means we have to dress dowdier. But there’s no reason not to stay stylish as you age.

“I think a lot of us limit ourselves as we mature, and we tend to limit ourselves to what we think is appropriate, and what we think is flattering and will suit us,” Sachse explains.

The problem is that these easy and seemingly flattering styles are often not working the way we think they are.

Tip one: break up the black

Sachse’s first tip is to stay away from head-to-toe black, which is not where we thought she was going with this!

“Here’s the problem. It can be really harsh against skin tone that gets lighter and more ashy as we age and it can accentuate the hollows under the neck and the eyes. So ditch the all-black from head to toe and break it up a little bit in some skin-softening neutrals like beiges tans or grays.”

We can’t argue with the results!

She keeps the black on the bottom and puts the neutral colors next to her face, adding neutral pumps to lengthen her legs. Of course, she’s tall, slender, and attractive, so it’s not like she was going to look bad before or after, but it’s still an interesting trick.

Tip two: Choose patterns with care

This is a tough one. You might love a pattern on a dress, but it still may not suit you.

(Frankly, we like the before dress more though!)

Of course, you can wear anything you darn well please, but if you’re going for a more youthful-but-classic look, Sachse explains that it’s probably best to stay away from sharp lines:

“Hard, geometric lines can look really strict and aging, as well as darker colors. So in this case, you might want to opt for lighter and brighter shades with softer and more curved patterns.”

Tip three: Update your denim game

Here’s a harsh truth:

“The skinny jeans look with that thick wedge is so yesterday and it’s gonna have you screamin’ ‘I’m ready for carpool and a glass of rosé!’ A thick shoe draws attention to the calf and it makes your bottom half look heavier.”

Denim tends to be an incredibly personal choice and it’s almost always traumatic to shop for. But Sachse reminds us that the ankle crop is especially “in” right now as well as universally flattering.

Paired with a high-waist to get rid of that muffin top and allow for a little tucking, you can make jeans look as dressed up as you want. Just stay away from “aged” denim with tears. Leave that to the teenagers.

Ankle-crop jeans draw eyes to your shoes as well, so put some thought into how they’ll tie your outfit together. A strappy heel for nighttime is great, as is a modern-looking mule for daytime.

Tip 4: Ditch the jersey and the rounded necklines

Yes, it’s comfortable and you deserve to be comfortable. But jersey material is so clingy that it’s almost universally unflattering.

And while you’re at it, Schase sticks another tip in here as well about necklines – skip the rounded necklines!

We never thought about it this way before, but now that we see it on someone else, we have to agree with the beauty expert here:

“High round necklines also cut you off. They tend to make you look heavier in the chest area and they don’t elongate. And then adding to the trouble is a short and rounded necklace. So the way to avoid this look which makes you look wider and dated is to pop in a nice v-neck top that elongates you and allows for more jewelry options.”

Go for a crisp white blouse when you’re feeling stuck. The classic lines go with jeans or a skirt and structure can be good for hiding parts of your body that you’re not super confident about.

Tip 5: Put some thought into your eyewear

Big, heavy glasses might make you think you’re giving off the sexy librarian vibe, but they can also add age to your face. If they sit too low they can also draw more attention to the hollows under your eyes.

Instead, Sachse suggests opting for lighter or even jewel-toned frames (though blondes can get away with black glasses because of the flattering contrast).

The key is the size and shape. So next time you’re trying on glasses, grab a pair of lighter, cat-eye frames and see if they make your face look more lifted and accentuate your cheekbones.

Tip 5: Go for the bronze

This is a tip we just can’t agree with, but it’s a personal choice.

Sachse recommends self-tanning (note: NOT the damaging sun!) to give your skin a golden glow.

It’s something you’ll have to try for yourself, but beware of looking too orange, because that’s not flattering to anyone!
