The pit bull had gotten used to the idea of being unwanted. But then a ray of sunshine came into her life, in the form of a kind-hearted toddler.
G and her mom rode to the shelter. They had decided to adopt a dog.
The mom told the little girl to take her time and pick the one that she wanted the most.
G looked all up and down the shelter. She stopped in front of a small female pit bull.
The mom thought that G would soon move on and go to a more conventionally attractive dog.
But G kept on staring into the pit bull’s eyes.
Eventually, she pointed at the dog, looked up at her mom and said, “Mommy, that one!”
The mom asked the girl if she was sure. After all, once they had adopted the dog, there was no going back. But the girl was adamant. She said that the dog needed help.
This dog had been in the shelter for a long time. She smelled bad and was snotty. But still, the girl saw past that and wanted to take her in.
Still, the mother was nervous. So she asked the shelter volunteers if G could take the dog outside and play with her. They agreed.
On the way out, the dog was so scared. But then G took the leash, and the dog followed her out.
Outside, the dog kept on following G. They played in the shelter yard. G’s mom could see that the two had a deep connection. And G kept on telling the mom that the dog was sick and needed help.
The dog couldn’t believe that she was being adopted.
Over the next few days, G and the dog became inseparable. She named the dog Scarlett.
In fact, Scarlett would hate it if G left her vicinity even for a second.
Soon, the shelter became a distant memory for Scarlett. She became much more confident, thanks to G’s love.
G and Scarlett’s story then appeared on YouTube, where it soon went viral.
To date, it has gained over 10.4 million views. It also has more than 189,000 likes and 11,300 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Clearly, many people have been inspired by G! She certainly is a great role model, despite the fact that she’s so young! She could definitely teach most adults a thing or two about compassion!
This is why it’s so important to adopt from shelters.
Sure, many shelter dogs may appear to be less cute and friendly at first. But with a little bit of love, it’s amazing how much they change!
Luckily, right now, there are many stories like Scarlett’s. Since coronavirus came to America, animal shelters have been emptying out, because so many people want a pet to get them through the hard times.
Hopefully, when the pandemic ends, the demand for pets stays just as high, and every animal can get the home they deserve.
