Sweet toddler comforts frightened dog during a thunderstorm

Experts aren’t really sure why dogs are scared of thunderstorms. Some think that it could be due to the flashes of lights or loud noise. Others think it may be due to dogs’ sensitive hearing. There are people who consider the change in air pressure or the low-frequency rumblings of thunder as the culprits behind a dog’s anxiety during thunderstorms.

For a child, none of those probably causes matter. If one sees a scared dog, he’ll simply try his best to comfort it.

A video of a scared dog has gone viral on Twitter.

In the video, you’ll see a really scared dog hiding in the utility room. This happened as a local storm was raging outside.

The dog was seriously frightened.

You can tell how scared the dog was by the way he’s curling his body and trying his best to hide in the room. He was visibly shaking, too.

A toddler came over and comforted the dog.

The child wasn’t fully aware of what’s happening outside. He simply reached out to the dog because he knew he was scared.

Wearing his diaper, he went over and hug the poor dog.

He started stroking his pet’s head and body. Realizing that it wasn’t doing enough, he started hugging the dog.

Although he can’t talk straight yet, he still managed to offer words of comfort to his pet. He looked like he was reassuring the dog that thunders will be over soon and that he’ll be fine.

Everyone who saw the heartwarming video has positive things to say about the boy.

One Twitter user said:

“For such a young child that’s a lot of empathy and compassion. God bless him and his buddy.”

Another one commented:

“We do not deserve children and animals. They are so wholesome and perfect.”

The video was only a minute long. Despite that, it was still able to deliver the right message.

Dogs, like humans, have fears and that includes thunderstorms.

As a dog owner, you need to know what to do to calm your pet down. One of them is creating a safe space for your dog.

If your dog isn’t crate-trained, you can use a small bathroom or a corner of your room as his safe place. Try to fill it with items he’s familiar with, like his favorite toys and his bed.

Distraction might work, too. You can turn on the TV or play calming music. In case your dog is the active type, you can engage him in an active play or offer his favorite toys. Consider rewarding him with nice treats as well.

You may also need to close the blinds. That way, your dog won’t be able to see what’s happening outside.

If those things don’t work, you might want to talk to your vet.

There are other remedies that might work for your dog, such as applying a vest. It works similarly to swaddling in babies. The constant pressure provides comfort in scared dogs.

There are medications that can help calm down your pet as well. However, since dogs react differently to medicines, you shouldn’t give your dog anything without consulting your vet. You might end up hurting your dog more if you give him the wrong medicine or the wrong dose.
