When Officer Perry Renn died in the line of duty, the entire city of Indianapolis mourned his passing. One little girl made a very significant gesture.
Officer Renn and his partner were called out when shots were fired in Indianapolis.
When they got to the scene, they chased the gunman to an alley. They then got involved in a tense shootout. Sadly, Renn was hit.
Renn was then rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the shot had caused irreparable damage. He was pronounced dead shortly after, aged just 51 years old.
In the coming days, the entire community heard about how Renn and his partner got into the shootout, protecting innocent people as they did so. There was a huge outpouring of grief from the community. But everyone was amazed when a little girl who had never met Renn showed her support for him in a very significant way.
Jason and Jennifer Fedeler were two members of the community who heard about Officer Renn’s sacrifice.
They knew that they had to attend a memorial that was made up of the officer’s squad car. They also decided to bring their three-year-old daughter Mckenzie to the memorial as well.
To teach Mckenzie about sacrifice, the parents told the girl that she should donate one of her favorite toys to the memorial. Mckenzie picked a teddy bear that she had had since birth.
Without any hesitation, Mckenzie placed the stuffed animal onto the car. The girl would miss the toy, but she knew that she had to show her appreciation for the fallen officer.
“I felt like it was a chance to teach her a lesson in life, that these men and women lay everything out there on the line for us. They don’t even know us.” – Jason Fedeler.
Mckenzie’s important gesture did not go unnoticed. Word soon spread around the police department of the little girl who had given up her teddy bear for Officer Renn. They decided to especially thank the girl in person.
A few days later, the Fedelers took to the streets for Officer Renn’s funeral procession. Then, one of the squad cars in the procession pulled over into the family’s driveway.
Officer Lance Rector walked up to the family. He explained to the Fedelers that Mckenzie’s gesture really meant a lot to them.
The officer also wanted to give Mckenzie a gift. He had brought his own personal favorite teddy bear for the girl to have along with a police patch and a memorial coin.
The toddler was appreciative of the gifts. But Jennifer, the girl’s mom, could no longer contain her emotions. She started crying. The parents have said that they will preserve the gifts in a shadow box.
Mckenzie’s father has since decided to become an Indianapolis patrol officer for the Department of Corrections. He hopes to do whatever he can to keep the community safe.
