2-year-old leads police to single mom who had just fled an abusive relationship with her 6 kids
It was seemingly just another day on the job for officers Reneeshia McIntyre and Delia Pesina.
The pair had worked together as partners on the force for a long while.
They’d gotten a call from an apartment complex in East Dallas and went over to investigate.
Upon arrival, they encountered a friendly 2-year old.
This wouldn’t be a standard hello and goodbye, however.
They met the two-year-old’s mother and learned a lot more than they expected. This mother wasn’t a well-off, happy, work-from-home mom. She was struggling to take care of 6 kids, none of whom were older than 11. Reneeshia and Delia learned of the mom’s past and how she ended up here.
The mom had fled an abusive spouse, taking all of the children with her.
This meant seven people all trying to live in a small, under-furnished apartment space. In fact, “under-furnished” is putting it lightly.
Barely anything was inside the apartment.
No beds or any furniture were present, and the mom was washing a styrofoam plate. Things were pretty bad. Delia went ahead and asked the mom how long they were living (or rather, trying to live) here. She told Delia and Reneeshia that it’d been a few months already.
It was unbelievable, and the two officers knew they couldn’t leave things the way they found them. In fact, officer McIntyre put it into her own words.
“We kinda read each other’s minds. You know, when you’re partners after so long? And when we were leaving, I immediately said to her ”So we’re coming back, aren’t we?’ We’re coming back. We’re going to take care of them.” – Officer Reneeshia McIntyre
They did exactly that and brought some extra help. This apartment needed lots of furniture, and that was just the beginning. Officers McIntyre and Pesina headed back to their station and asked for volunteers.
Good thing they got lots of them.
In a group effort, multiple officers accompanied the two on a particularly important shopping trip. Everything that this mom needed, she was going to get.
McIntyre and Pesina led the group effort to purchase beds, mattresses, cribs for the little ones, organizers to keep things orderly, and all the sheets and pillowcases to go with them.
“When we told the children ‘This is where you’re gonna be sleeping’, the excitement on their face was so…..it was so heartfelt.” – Officer Reneeshia McIntyre said to CBSDFW
Besides the heartfelt gesture of buying all the furniture, the officers also helped tidy up and furnish the entire apartment.
Of course, the single mother they helped was ecstatic and grateful. Over the phone, she can be heard saying “Thank y’all so much. I love y’all so much from the bottom of my heart”. I’m sure that put the biggest of smiles on everyone’s faces.
When officers McIntyre and Pesina swore to serve and protect, that went beyond the work done on the streets. Nothing protects quite like a home, and that’s what they gave this woman. They’re heroes through and through, even if they just consider it part of the job.
