Fathers can sometimes struggle with the idea of their daughters growing up and getting boyfriends. This dad was quick to make a joke about it.
Daughters often fall out with their dads. There’s no avoiding it. Even the most empathetic dad stumbles from time to time.
But this dad couldn’t believe his ears when his daughter, Grace, made a shock announcement.
The dad and daughter, who are from Scotland, took a drive one day, when the four-year-old said that what she wanted more than anything else was a boyfriend.
Most dads would react with confusion over this statement. Surely, four is far too young an age for boyfriends?
Luckily, this father was a true Scotsman, and he didn’t panic. Instead, he calmly reassured Grace as to what would happen if she got a boyfriend: “Daddy’ll break his legs.”
This really pissed off Grace. She shouted “No!” back to him.
The dad was quick to say that he would actually go through with his threat.
But the dad wasn’t done with traumatizing the girl.
He then asked the girl to guess what would happen after he was done savagely mauling her boyfriend. The girl asked what. The dad went on to explain that he would find her boyfriend’s dad, take him hostage and keep him in a cupboard.
The girl went back to square one. She announced that she was getting a boyfriend. That was when the father announced that he had his own plans for her. He wanted to make her a nun.
Then the father and daughter kept on arguing until the video cut out.
This argument then appeared online, where it soon went viral. To date, it has gained over 32 million views. It also has more than 87,000 reactions, 49,000 shares and 20,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Some say that Scottish humor lacks subtlety, and this video will do very little to change that perception. The dad is clearly joking about breaking the boyfriend’s legs. But there’s no denying that the threat sounds scary coming from a gruff Glaswegian accent.
Luckily, deep down, Grace knows that her dad is just teasing her. When she finally does get a boyfriend, the dad will accept him (possibly a little begrudgingly, though.)
Of course, the dad in this video is playing up to the overprotective dad stereotype. Some people think that this stereotype is dangerous. But is it really so bad, or should people just learn to laugh along with it?
The stereotype crops up time and time again in media. People who argue against its portrayal say that it reinforces sexism and the idea that women can’t be trusted to make decisions for themselves.
There is definitely some truth to those arguments. And surely fathers should, in an ideal world, encourage their daughters not to never find a boyfriend but to find the right boyfriend.
But you can’t force people to stop pandering to the stereotype. After all, 32 million people have watched that clip of Grace and her dad. And many of the viewers have stated that they find the exchange funny and cute.
Perhaps the answer is a balanced approach? Sure, the odd joke about an overprotective father can be funny now and then. But fathers should also make it clear that those jokes are just jokes and teach their daughters to find a partner who respects them. After all, even the most overprotective father wants their daughter to grow up to be happy, and a fulfilling relationship is an important part of happiness!
