Adorable puppy is too nice to cut it as police dog – but he gets huge career upgrade

You might not think there is such a thing as too friendly of a dog, but one Brisbane, Australia puppy just proved there most certainly is.

Gavel is a gorgeous purebred German Shepherd, and when he was just a tiny puppy he was drafted into the police dog training program. If he could pass his courses, Gavel would become part of the Queensland Police Service K-9 unit. While it would be an honor to serve on the unit, that just wasn’t what fate had in store for this puppy.

It’s not that there is anything wrong with the puppy, per se, but he definitely wasn’t “fitting in” with the rigorous program. Why? Because he’s just a big ol’ lover.

Gavel didn’t fit in at the doggy police academy because he didn’t care too much for police work. Rather than sniffing for explosive devices or hunting down criminals, the puppy much preferred to just roll over for some nice belly rubs.

As it turns out, though, everything in Gavel’s life is going to be just fine.

In fact, it’s better than fine! When the puppy got kicked out of his police training program, an entirely different job was waiting just around the corner from him…

The socialite puppy was the perfect pooch to fill the official position for Vice-Regal Working dog.

The very best part about Gavel’s major job upgrade? He doesn’t have to do anything other than what he already loves; being friendly. After all, politics is all about schmoozing the right people, and no one can do that better than a puppy.

The puppy was adopted by Queensland Governor, Paul de Jersey.

Governor de Jersey has known Gavel since he joined the K-9 unit training program. The pup had always been meant to live with the governor. The two first met when Gavel was only 10 weeks old when he came to stay for the duration of his training.

Unfortunately, though, Gavel’s stay would, seemingly, be canceled due to being cut from the training academy. But then his good old buddy Paul stepped in.

When the governor caught wind that the adorable puppy that had been his guest had gotten the boot from his training program, he knew that he had to do something to help Gavel out.

So, the kindhearted and compassionate governor made haste to declare that Gavel would be the official Vice-Regal dog of Queensland from now on. The governor adopted Gavel into both his family and his career. Don’t worry though. The most stressful part of the job still falls on de Jersey’s shoulders.

What does fall on Gavel’s shoulders, however, is his super slick, fancy new jacket indicating that he is official royalty now. You can tell by the way he wears it, so handsome and proud, that he knows his position is super important.

The great thing about it is that Gavel is perfect at his new job!

He only has to do what comes naturally to him, and he hasn’t failed his human yet. He is the perfect picture of a kind, open, loving, and sociable dog, and he has finally found his place in this world.

Gavel’s story just goes to prove that even if somebody is absolutely awful at one thing, it just means that they are perfect for something else! We’re happy things worked out for Gavel. If you’d like to follow him on his adventures, you can see more pictures and videos on his Instagram page.
