People in law enforcement are often known for their toughness, a necessary trait for stopping criminals and ensuring public safety.

The same can be said for K9 dogs that assist these officers. Most K9 unit dogs are large, resilient, and highly skilled in their duties. They possess the remarkable ability to detect danger or locate individuals in need of rescue from miles away. Sonny is one of these exceptional K9 dogs, always prepared for duty when the time comes.

Sonny’s handler is Corporal Jason Frey from the Clinton Police Department in Connecticut.

According to Jason, Sonny is always eager to go on duty and fully embraces his role as a police dog. Whenever he sees Jason in his uniform, Sonny wastes no time in climbing into the patrol car. Jason considers Sonny to be his ideal partner, and they share a deep bond.

Jason reveals that Sonny often appears to be listening when he vents his frustrations, and he can sense Sonny’s understanding.

They have developed a unique form of communication, with Sonny responding to Jason’s emotions through barks. However, once their work is done, Sonny swiftly switches off his “cop” mode.

At home, Sonny transforms into a loving older brother to his baby sister, Reagan.

Although Jason and his wife, Lainey, used to view Sonny as their entire world, their perspective changed when Reagan was born. Initially, they were concerned about how Sonny would adapt to no longer being the center of attention. To their surprise, he adjusted remarkably well. Despite his tough demeanor on duty, Sonny displayed remarkable patience and tenderness towards his little sister. His love for Reagan was evident in his gentle interactions, allowing her to play with his paws, ears, and tail without any objection. He even tolerated her crawling all over him, demonstrating his understanding of his role as a protective big brother.

Sonny’s watchful nature extends to his interactions with Reagan.

He often lies down nearby, observing her every move as she plays. Occasionally, he showers her face with tender licks or snuggles up beside her, and Reagan appears to cherish these moments of affection.

When Jason and Sonny were away from home, Reagan would gaze lovingly at their photograph.

Lainey captured a heartwarming moment when she found Reagan silently contemplating the picture. It seemed as though Reagan understood that her father and big brother were at work, yet she could still feel their presence through the photograph.

Now, with the arrival of their second baby girl, Jason and Lainey have no doubts that she is in capable hands.

Sonny continues to excel in his role as a guardian, extending his care to their new family member. Reagan, too, has taken on the responsibility of looking after their youngest sibling.

It is a testament to their strong bond and the loving dynamics within their family.
