Traumatized pit bull was scared of snow learns what it's like to have a family
Trauma is tough to get out of a person. It’s just as hard to get out of a dog too. Dogs can’t talk, so all those therapy techniques that work on your friend won’t be any good here.
Dogs learn through experience. Exposure therapy is what seems to reach them.
Roman the pitbull came from the streets of San Antonio. He had a rough life, and had more than enough physical signs to prove it.
The dog was covered in scars and didn’t even have his left ear anymore. When people found him, they suspected he was a bait dog.
In case you don’t know what that is, it’s a dog who plays the role of a punching bag for fighting dogs. As if dog-fighting couldn’t get any more inhumane.
To make matters worse, the shelter had him scheduled for euthanasia.
Thankfully, a family came to adopt him before he could be euthanized. And so began his new life.
And this new life was much kinder to Roman than his old one. To think that he came that close to having his life end at the hands of a needle.
But adjusting to his new life wouldn’t be easy for the pitbull.
Removing a dog from a traumatic place doesn’t remove the trauma from the dog.
According to his mom, it took Roman a while to cope and deal with the trauma from his past life.
He made slow progress much to his mom’s joy. Little by little, Roman learned that not everything was out to get him – be it humans or other dogs.
Roman became a totally different dog with the help of his new family.
No longer did he shy away or bark in anxiety when he saw unfamiliar things.
The pitbull would not happily go for walks with his family and socialize with other dogs. He specifically developed this habit of looking at his human’s eyes before looking back at a stranger or a new sight – almost as if he’s reassuring them that he’s not scared.
Trauma slowly left the dog as his personality grew much warmer and sunnier.
You can find him napping next to his dad on many days – something he never got to do on the streets.
Roman’s mom is very, very protective of him. She knows him better than anyone and gets upset when someone is unkind or unwelcoming to Roman.
“I just wanna be like ‘You don’t know what this dog has been through. The fact that he’s walking around right now, getting fresh air and enjoying life. Don’t look at him that way!”
Pitbulls still face a ton of discrimination for being “dangerous” dogs.
As many stories as there are about how sweet Pitbulls really are, some people still aren’t convinced.
Roman is just another pup in the puddle showing how wrong they are. After all, there’s no bad dogs. Only bad owners.
