Trooper sees child in backseat during traffic stop and tells the mom to get up and follow him
When your hands are on the wheel and your foot on the gas and brakes, the last sound you want to hear are police sirens. The words “Oh great, what did I do?” flash through your head, and maybe you secretly hope they’re after another driver.
Niya Sumter, a Mississippi resident and mother, had this exact experience.
Driving to a doctor’s appointment for her son, with him in the car seat, she got called over by a trooper for speeding.
With a child’s medical appointment on your schedule, this is the last thing a busy single mom needed. But I guess the law is the law, and so she followed.
The officer in the car behind was Bradley Sanders, and he probably thought this would have been a typical workday for him.
After walking towards Sumpter’s vehicle and looking inside, he probably had to change plans a bit.
As he was conversing with Niya over the speeding violation, Sanders couldn’t ignore the small child in the car seat. Niya’s son, Kaemon, was “strapped in” the seat, sure. Though he had quite a lot of wiggle room on there.
Child safety was the thought here, but Sanders wasn’t stupid. If Niya was responsible enough to drive her son to the doctor, then there’s no reason why she would knowingly gloss over a child’s car safety. Putting two and two together, Sanders seems to have guessed that the single mom simply couldn’t afford a child seat for her car.
First came the three speeding tickets.
When that was all over and done with, officer Sanders had one more thing to do.
Sanders received a call from his wife right as he was speaking to Niya and her son.
He knows what taking care of a family is like.
He wrote the tickets, as his job required him to do. Then he had some additional instructions for Niya. Clearly, Kaemon needed a better seat. Sanders was going to give him one.
The officer told Niya to follow him to a nearby Walmart, where he bought the toddler a child’s car seat. He lined up at the cashier and everything.
Now Kaemon didn’t have to shake and wiggle around in the car seat.
That wasn’t the end of it. Remember when he wrote Niya those 3 tickets for speeding? Well, he’s going to void them in the courtroom and let her off the hook. I guess officer Bradley Sanders really just wanted to help.
This was obviously out of nowhere and very kind of the officer. Niya didn’t forget to thank him for it. She wrote in a Facebook post :
“Can I say how good god is headed to my son Dr. Apt Got Pulled Over Mr. Bradley Sanders he Gave Me 3 Tickets After giving me my tickets he said follow me let’s go buy your baby a car seat ! Due to Kaemon Being in a big boy seat and trying to get out of it while the police talking to me. He told me in January when I go to court he will throw them out I just thank god.”
This one goes out to all the folks who go out their way to help people during their day job.
Whether they’re baristas, waiters, cops, cashiers, or gardeners. A little kindness can go a long way, and a lot of people won’t ever forget it.
