Driving long distances, crossing countries on a truck must be tiring and boring sometimes unless you have some kind of company with you. Matthew B., the young driver of an 18-wheeler, had found the best company for himself, his grey, 3-month-old cat, Ashes.

Together, Matthew and Ashes covered long distances, enjoying each other’s company. Until one day, while they were passing through Springfield, Ohio, in July last year, Ashes accidentally slipped out of the truck while that was parked at the Love’s stop. Apparently, the unfamiliar grounds scared the little kitty and his survival instinct led him to go and hide in the bushes. When Matthew realized his buddy had run away it was too late.

The cat soon diverged from where his owner was, and it was too scared and disoriented to go back. Matthew didn’t quit looking for him over the next months. After looking for him on the day of his disappearance, he had to go back to the truck and get back to work, but over the next months, he rearranged his schedule several times so that he could have the chance to pass through Springfield again and keep looking for Ashes.

When all his attempts proved fruitless, the trucker decided he had to come to terms with the fact that he would probably never see his favorite feline friend again.

But, just then, his phone rang and he received the best news from an organization dedicated to bringing together people and animals through education and community programs. The Lollypop Farm staff told him that they had found his cat and he could go pick him up.

It seems that months after Ashes’ disappearance, a woman happened to bump into him at the area where he had originally been lost. The woman couldn’t remain unaffected at the sight of the beautiful grey cat which was trying to protect itself from the cold. So she decided to take him with her and safely transfer him to Lollypop Farm in New York.

The first thing that the admissions team at Lollypop Farm did was to scan the cat for a microchip- and, guess what, Ashes did have one! This was actually what played the most important role in this reunion. Through the microchip, they could track the cat’s owner and call him to let him know that his cat had been found and that it was safe and sound.

Matthew arranged his schedule so that he would stop by New York, and sometime later he appeared at the animal center. At the sight of Ashes, his heart melted and he burst into tears. He even called this reunion “his Christmas miracle”. The cat was really relieved to see his owner too, and the two of them spent some time hugging before they left in search of new adventures.

Stories like this one make us realize how important microchipping is for pets. They also warm our hearts and make us believe that there are still people out there who would care for a lost pet and make sure they do anything they can to help it get back to its owner.
