Meet Trumpet the Bloodhound who grabs the gold and wins 'Best in Show' at Westminster Dog Show

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show boasts of a rich history but another first was recorded in its books. A handsome bloodhound has been named “Best in Show”.

This very prestigious dog show is traditionally held at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Organizer’s this year had the show take place at Lyndhurst Mansion, which is a National Historic Landmark in Tarrytown, New York.

The 146th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show saw the show start on Saturday and conclude on a Wednesday evening.

It was a great show with so many wonderful dogs taking part in the event.

They all faced serious competition so judges were faced with making tough decisions for all breeds. Names were then called for Sporting, Terrier, Working, Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding.

They all came forward to try their paw at the coveted title of “Best in Show”.

There’s a very dashing dog named Trumpet who came out with his best, showing everyone his stuff in order to beat all of the other hound dogs to win the hound group.

Trumpet went on to compete against all the other group winners, proving that he really is a special dog.

This 4-year-old bloodhound went up against a French bulldog, a German shepherd, a Maltese, an English setter, a Samoyed and a Lakeland terrier. That French bulldog took second place!

The hound group did win the show seven years ago, and that’s a really log time so now was Trumpet’s chance to toot his horn. There were over 3,000 dogs in the contest but Trumpet took home the gold.

Look how handsome he is!

Westminster Dog Show took to Facebook, announcing the results to the delight of their followers and viewers. They were so happy to see a bloodhound on the podium.

One viewer who owns a bloodhound was so ecstatic that he commented, “Finally! Best breed ever! Think of all the lives they’ve saved. They are so loyal. We were excited about the win!”

Another said, “Great choice. All the dogs in my opinion are winners.”

Dogs are winners. All of them.

Trumpet comes from one of the oldest breeds of dogs that hunt by scent.

Bloodhounds are awesome scent hounds with unique, adorable features that make it seem like they’re always sad. They make for great great family pets since these big dogs are gentle, mild-mannered, and wonderful with kids.

Those floppy ears and wrinkles are too cute to ignore!

Trumpet is owned by Chris and Bryan Flessner, Heather Buehner and Tina Kocar.

This handsome boy showed his poise and powerful stride which impressed his audience and the judges.

“I was shocked,” said handler, co-breeder and co-owner Heather. “The competition was stiff and sometimes I feel the bloodhound is a bit of an underdog.”

And what did Trumpet do when he won?

He poised for photos then showed them what a bloodhound does best. He went sniffing.
