Uber driver picked up mom from NICU then surprises her with 30 outfits for new baby
When people get in an Uber, it’s usually for a ride. They are either out to do complete some errands or go straight home from work or school.
When Uber driver Belinda Smith picked up Nikki Ihus at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, she thought that it was just going to be an ordinary ride.
However, as soon as Nikki hopped in, she felt something was wrong. Her passenger wasn’t having the best day and she could tell right away.
In an interview with ABC Action News, Belinda shared:
“She needed to talk and I was there to listen. People don’t listen anymore. I believe people get in my car for a reason other than a ride.”
In the car, Nikki told Belinda her story.
Turns out, the new mom was feeling tired, lonely, and scared. She was in the hospital because her newborn baby has been diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia or CDH.
It’s marked by the presence of a large hole in the baby’s diaphragm. This hole allows other internal organs to enter one’s chest cavity, posing problems to the infant’s lungs. CDH requires major surgery and the hospital is one of the best places to get treated for it. Because of the child’s condition, Nikki had to be with him at the hospital until the doctors give them the go signal to go home.
Nikki’s son, John Henry, is doing better.
However, despite his progress, he’s still not allowed to go home to be with his family in Kansas. The mother and child need to stay in the hospital for a few more months. This left the new mom feeling sad and homesick. She doesn’t have anyone else to rely on during their stay in the hospital and it’s starting to affect her negatively.
Nikki called an Uber because she wanted to buy some clothes for her son.
Belinda did her job. However, instead of leaving the new mom, she refused to drive away.
She shared:
“So I parked the car and turned Uber off. I went in and I found her and said, ‘This is a day that should be fun for you. And you shouldn’t be alone. Let’s shop.”
After hearing that, the new mom cried a lot.
The Uber driver didn’t just accompany her to the store; she actually bought about 30 pieces of baby clothes for Nikki. Even the people in the store were amazed.
Belinda shared:
“They asked me how long I’ve known her. I said, ‘Oh, about 15 minutes.”
After a few days, Belinda came to the hospital.
When she returned, she wasn’t an Uber driver but a friend. And there, she met Nikki’s precious sone for the first time.
The story just proves that we should be kind to everyone we meet. There’s no telling what each person is going through and being kind can help make a difference in their day or even their lives.
