Before calling an expensive plumber, unclog your toilet in just 7 easy steps
Ah, the toilet. Having to go anywhere near it for cleaning purposes is far from the most anticipated household chore. And if the toilet gets clogged, and needs some serious performance from your end? So much worse.
Unfortunately, as a wise man once said, s**t happens. Which means that from time to time, we’re probably all going to experience a toilet blockage situation.
But all is not lost. Even if you haven’t got a plunger lying around, there’s no need to fork out for a plumber just yet. Usually, it’s perfectly possible to de-clog your toilet without having to resort to professional help.
Follow these simple steps below and store them away for future reference…
- Gather your supplies
To begin, you need all the appropriate equipment to get the job done. Gather some dish soap, shampoo, paper towel, bleach, and a coat hanger, and prepare to get stuck into the task at hand.
- Turn off your water
The last thing you need right now is even more water filling up your tank. Turn it off completely at the back of your tank. You can also make life even easier by lifting the float ball or chain in the toilet’s tank, which will prevent overflow.
- Grab your hanger
Start simple: get jabbing with your hanger. You may be able to loosen up the offending items and naturally break up the clog. Try turning the water back on and flushing the toilet after several seconds of prodding. In some instances, this may be enough to clear the issue, and you can go and give your hands a good wash.
- Apply the paper towel method
Sadly, life isn’t always as easy as you’d hope. In more serious clogging situations, you’ll need to think more creatively. Here’s where the paper towel method comes in. Simply place a wad of paper towel in the trap-way of your toilet. Then squeeze a generous amount of dish soap into your toilet, and let it soak into the paper towel. Leave it for 20 minutes.
Next, tip a good amount of hot water into the toilet. This should work together with the soap to loosen the clog. Turn the water on and flush the toilet (while closing your eyes, crossing your fingers and praying for a miracle).
- Try the shampoo method
Who’d have thought you’d have so many exciting choices when it came to unclogging a toilet? If you fancy using something with a different scent and texture, you can try switching your dish soap for shampoo.
In this case, squeeze a good load of shampoo into your toilet, then let it sit for 20 minutes without the paper towel. Add a gallon of very hot – though not boiling – water, leave for another few minutes, then turn your water back on and flush.
- Give bleach a go
If all else fails, bleach is your hero. Simply pour 2 to 3 cups of bleach straight into your toilet bowl, followed by a cup of powdered dishwashing soap. Leave it for 10 minutes or so to give it time to loosen the clog. Then turn on the water and flush.
- Relax
… you’ve earned it! Anyone who has ever successfully unclogged a toilet deserves a medal. It’s certainly one of the most disgusting jobs to do, but these hacks should hopefully make it a little easier!
